Traveling to Cornwall

Hi all,

Me and the family are going to be traveling down to Cornwall in August for a week and was wondering if anyone on here as done it.

The reason for the post is we are planning to stop over somewhere going down and up and was after some recommendations.

We fancy Longleat zoo so that might be one option, any others?

Cheers

Warwick and / or Stratford on Avon. Both great places to visit ( Warwick has the castle which caters fantastically for families and Stratford on Avon has so much to see relating to William Shakespeare).

I can recommend Longleat... My dad lives 8 miles away and we go most times we are down (family of 4... 2 lads 5/8)... its expensive to get in but you only really have to pay for food once you're there... (although we always take a picnic)

if you want to stay outside of the estate area look at Shaftesbury area/blackmoor vale.

Stratford is a good shout. Although last time I did it I just set off at 5am and did it in one go. Was way down near Bristol before I started to see any major traffic on the roads.

Be warned the M5 southbound on changeover day can be a nightmare. When our kids were younger we used to stop off in Gloucester on the Friday night then get up early on Saturday morning to resume the journey.

Honestly, I'm not sure how you'll find the time to fit in an attraction either going down or coming back.

My advice would be to just get your heads down early.

It may depend on which part of Cornwall you are going to. I have lived in the South West for 40 years and have a pretty good knowledge of the traffic. The M5 is heavily congested from Bristol to Exeter during the summer particularly on a Saturday. The A30 into Cornwall is only a dual carriageway and will also be busy.
If you go to Longleat you will have to travel on the A303, which will be busy with all the vehicles from South of London avoiding the M4, this will add hours onto your journey.
Personally I would take an overnight break at either Gloucester/Cheltenham where you could possible enjoy Cheltenham or go into the Cotswolds (Bourton on the Water etc).
Alternatively I would head to Bristol, always a great city to spend time in. I used to live in Clevedon which is a nice Victorian seaside town just off the M5 and is nice for a break.
Devon and Cornwall are going to be very busy this year, and so I suggest you do some research on finding places to go to avoid the crowds. We have had massive problems in North Devon with people wanting to park on a nice day.

Have a great holiday

Another to recommend Cheltenham. Stop off in the Cotswolds first. Bourton on the water will be heaving so I’d avoid like the plague, but nearby Upper/Lower Slaughter are nice or Stowe on the Wold, then spend the night in Cheltenham.

Definitely get set off as early as possible as mentioned changeover day is a nightmare!

We have family in North Devon and visit 3 times a year We normally stop off on the way, we were there 2 weeks ago and stopped in Cheltenham but we have stopped in Stratford and Gloucester. Stratford is our fav The M5 is a nightmare at times we come off at Tiverton so can say about the rest We came back this time on a Sunday afternoon absolute chocca the road up to Bristol wont be doing that again

I've been to Cornwall twice and just drove straight down both times. Set off early, stop around Birmingham and then straight into Cornwall. It was easier going to the St Austel area than St Ives driving wise.

I totally agree. We tend to head down on a Friday night, stay in a premier Inn or something off the M5 and then complete the journey early the next morning.

I've done it for the last 4 years, we stay over each way in the Travel lodge just off the M5 at Gloucester. Breaks the journey up nicely. We don't stop anywhere else going down there, but if the weather is decent on your way home, a trip to Bolsover Castle would be well recommended. You'll love Cornwall by the way, absolutely fantastic place.
