Is John Lewis a "posh" department store?

Its top end of the market - most of the time its products are strong, reliable and well made [in my experience].
Always cheaper alternatives elsewhere.
Waitrose is always over-priced.
Suppose you pay for the old-fashioned "Service" - not just the production-line in other shops?

we shop at waitrose and sainsburys, I'd say while waitrose is more expensive the quality is much better particularly for meats and fish. Also a greater range of products in waitrose which is probably ultimately what you pay the higher prices for.

I wouldn't say JL department stores are really posh, they have a good mix of price ranges now which are really competitive. Their customer service is second to non for the price point though, always really impressed which is one of the reasons I go and buy big ticket products from them.

I bought a washing machine, a complete bed and mattress from there in the last 6 months.
The service is excellent and I know the products will last.
When you ask the people in store about a product - they take time to listen and know about the product.
They look smart and appear to have a genuine interest in meeting customers needs.
You get what you pay for - and the extras.

Was always considered a premium dept store when I was a kid, was a bit of a treat to go there, Fenwick's or Bainbridge's. Never in the league of Fortnum and Mason or Harrod's, but a cut above other similar stores. Always been good for price matching, we buy from JL quite a bit looking around and thinking where did we get that from

I would say John Lewis is above average, but not premium. I have one of their cards to get free coffe/tea and cake once every 3 months. The roof terrace is nice at Westfield near Shepherds Bush. Have also used the cafe @ Oxford Street which which was very good.

People knock the Boro, but Binns was a decent department store until it became House of Fraser.

I have only ever bought a kettle from JL deliveried free to my local Waitrose supermarket, as I don't live near a John Lewis. I gather from others their product service is spot on and their product knowledge. The way we are going the internet will kill them off. Waitrose products in general are over priced, however if you shop at 4.40pm on Sunday some fresh products are 80% reduced and there is a free £3 sunday paper if you spend £10 or more.

As a cooperative their staff are knowledgeable, helpful and among the very best at providing information and customer service, quite often they’ve directed us towards items of equal quality at lower ticket prices, we use them quite a lot and find them by far the best organisation in their price band in terms of after care, service and quality.

You'd be surprised how poor F&Ms customer service is.

Only ever bought online from there and there's been no issues, so haven't experienced their customer service to be fair. You right though if it is poor, you'd expect better from such a premium store

I've always thought of John Lewis as being posh.

But, then again, I have never set foot inside a Waitrose either, so what do I know?

Never liked John Lewis since I once heard the top man there on 5 Live (a few years back when they were doing well) saying he couldn’t see a John Lewis store in somewhere like Middlesbrough because that was not the image and market they were trying to reach.

I was appalled to listen to him.

Premium high St I would say. Often seem overpriced, but they have great customer service and often give extended warranty on items which can be handy.

Waitrose, pah, refuse to go there as they prop up the royals with their Duchy produce....I mean OUR duchy produce that the royals cream our money off.

Went to the Waitrose in Rickmansworth once....and once only.
The level of snooterey from its clientele was astronomical.
Real 'blue rinse', WI, pearls and twinset harridans.
