44 million 50% are women and another 10% are children

so 40% of 31 million, I believe so 12 million Black men.

Whats your point exactly Heam, that you would expect more civillians to be shot per capita than police officers? Please tell me that's not your argument.

No that’s not my point at all. In fact I wasn’t even making a point, I was simply providing a statistic that I thought was relevant to the discussion.

On cool I did give the death rate percentages for both police officers versus black men earlier in the thread.

Obviously I’m no expert on America / race / firearms / policing in America / policing in general etc. In fact I’ve never even been to America.

However I doubt the police in America are racist, obviously some will be (more so in the southern states I.e Texas etc) but I’d imagine the vast vast majority of US cops aren’t racist.

However it’s undeniable that more black people are killed by the police per capita in comparison to other races.

But I think that is likely to be most due to black people being over represented in the poverty stricken areas.

I’d imagine the correlation between being shot by the police and being poor is closely related. I’d be interested to see stats based on the income / social status of people killed by the police.

I think “unconscious bias” will have a lot to do with it, I’d imagine the police are much slower to reach for their gun if they pull a nerdy guy over who fails to comply but he’s wearing a smart suit with a nice car and a posh accent etc.

As opposed to a hill billy / black guy / Hispanic wearing a bandana with string vest, tattoos on his face sat in an old knackered pick up truck etc.

And it’s very hard to ignore unconscious bias, it’s like trying to ignore everything you’ve ever learned since you were a kid. Every experience you’ve had, every interaction you’ve been involved in, every tv show you’ve ever watched etc.

Ultimately wide spread poverty and millions of guns are not a good mix.

Very likely all that plays a part doesn't explain the black doctor that was shot in the back whilst kneeling on the floor by his car, in front of his wife.

The majority will not be racist, I bet a large number are.

On cool I did give the death rate percentages for both police officers versus black men earlier in the thread.

Statistically, in 2019, black or African Americans accounted for 56% of all homicide offences in the US. 55% of homicide victims were black or AA. 81% of black victims were killed by someone from the same ethnic group.

White homicide perpetrators were 41%, of the total, and white victims 42%. 88% of the white people who died were killed by another white person.

Considering the size of the respective groups, the offending rate for black or AA people is 6 times higher than for white people.

(FBI, DoJ)

So draw whatever conclusions you want. The notion of a race war doesn't stack up.

I never mentioned a race war Soutra, and it is no suprise that ethnic groups overwhelmingly kill within their own ethnic group, you tend to kill people you know.

Yeah of course there’s going to be exceptions, with the numbers involved its an absolute guarantee.

What numbers are you talking? What % for example?

I’d bet the percentage of racist police officers is far lower than the percentage of racist Americans in general.

The taser grip is totally different, there's slight design variations but they are similar to the one that was worn by the officer...

The officer in this case is a vet of 26 years, not some rookie. If she can't handle a situation like that without all of her senses becoming clouded to the point of being unable to recognise the side she reached for, the weight of the weapon she's holding and the difference between bright yellow and black then she's not fit to serve.

Again all these errors, reactions and emotions are somehow an acceptable defence for a police officer killing someone yet the unarmed civilian is suppose to be calmly compliant without making any errors in judgement to avoid being shot.

No way is what happened simply an accident, it is gross negligence given the number of failures of basic judgement that were required to get to the point of this man being killed.
Wouldn't the weight of both guns play a factor aswell?
I've never held a Glock 17 but imagine it weighs more than a plastic taser.

Yes, apologies, I know you didn't. There's a popular narrative about interracial strife in the US that I was referring to.

Personally I don't kill many people :) but I have a very diverse group of friends, so if I did transgress, it may be someone from outside my ethic group.

Good question Heam I have no idea. I do think that racism is far more common than we think. Whether there are more racist police officers than in the population I don't know, but in the profession they are in they should be rooted out. No idea how, but it needs to happen.

I am more likely to kill an Indian guy than a white britt also. Its good to be equal opportunity in everything we do.

Yeah I mentioned earlier that the taser weighs 1/4 the weight of a Glock, definitely a difference that should be noticed.

What are your thoughts on the police in general? You’re obviously an intelligent guy but I’ve noticed your very active on any thread with an anti-police / police negative thread and so come across as being anti-police / police critical? Of course you’re generally a very active member anyway, on other threads etc so I could be wrong.

By the police
I thought that statistic was in general, I.e black men being gunned down by anyone.

The link I provided above says that for the last few years the numbers of black PEOPLE shot dead by the police each year was between 209-241.
