So basically with 1/4 of the season to go

we might, and I repeat MIGHT, be good enough to squeak into that last play off berth, but we are far from being good enough to win the play offs, although on the day? who knows? We are so terribly inconsistent in terms of both performances and results. How can we put in performances like when we beat up Reading, to rolling over and being taken advantage off so comprehensively by Rotherham? its unfathomable.

We are so far away from being good enough to be promoted, and gone are the days of us being able to spend big in order to sustain a premier league survival battle. There are maybe 3 or 4 players at a push that would even get into a top 3 championship team let alone a bottom half premier side. (McNair, Fry, Bolasie and Howson).

Either way, it promises to be a hell of a ride for the remainder of the season.

Not sure I agree with that. I agree we don’t look good enough to get in the play offs at the moment, but once we are in there I think we have as much chance as anyone. Cliche but really is a bit of a lottery and If we are bang at it we can give anyone a game.

Agree with this. The style of football we play I think we needed a strong start followed by "defending" a playoff place if that makes sense? Rather than mounting a late push.

Felt the same with Pulis' first full season.

I can't see Barnsley carrying on this form till the end of the season, so I'm not overly worried by them, and if they do then fair play to them and I hope they get promoted.

They've won 5 out of the last 5, and no one sustains that kind of form.

That said, they've been a decent side for over a year now, and recovered very well from losing their manager to New York at the start of the season. 1.5 points/game until the end of the season would leave them with 72 points, which has been enough in a few seasons. They are capable of that.

I'm not sure I want us to be promoted this season. We don't have a strong enough squad to build into a Premier League team. We'd need 7 or 8 new first team players. I'd be afraid of complete humiliation.

we are one of five teams that might be able to squeak into that last play off place.

the play offs is an entirely different kettle of fish, you can't judge historical league performance with how teams will perform in the playoffs. Warnock knows, Howson knows, Bolasie knows, Mendez-Laing knows, Betinelli knows, Kebano knows.

saying we only have 3 or 4 players at a push that wouldn't get into a top three champo side is a bit dafty, I think it's only our strikers that would struggle tbh

I wonder if Gibson might discover the Tory money tree and spend spend spend, doubt it like.

I really do wonder if some posters really believe what they post. Our last 6 home games - won 1 drawn 1 lost 4 points out of 18 - 4.

Our away form is better no doubt. However the latest home results prove conclusively we are far from improving. That is the reality and no amount of window dressing will alter this fact.
I agree with N-K - if our home form does not improve then we have no chance of finishing in the top 6 - we are a counter attacking team and don't have the guile to break down teams at home consistently.

so you would rather see the likes of Reading, Barnsley, Cardiff or Bournemouth get promoted ahead of us?
I think we have a strong core which could easily be strengthened with some premier league money.
we have a thin squad with a couple of gaps.. plug them up with quality players and you're good to go!

we need to finish the season on promotion form, and we'd need that to compete in the playoffs.. we have players who are capable of that.

Thing is in football you have to take a chance when it happens, there's no guarentee that we'll be in this position next season
I agree with NS we have to improve our home record though to get into the top 6, which I still believe we will, we can't rely on going away & winning & we can't rely on going behind to mount a comeback either

The difference between you and I is that if I won a £1m on the lottery I would not be disappointed it was not £10m.

Same as Before, the difference between you and me is I apply fact to form logic. I am not a fantasist and as such can’t see this improvement you suggest.

That's not really a very accurate summation though is it?

3 points behind the team in 6th, but another point behind if you count the goal difference
Two teams between Boro and 6th, both with games tonight, one will still have another game in hand after tonight
Boro playing at Swansea next, one of the team in the auto promotion mix

Let's hope your summation is still the same by next weekend.
No , we are 3 points off a play off place, the BBC says so that will do me.

Goal difference with a 1/4 of a season to go is not relevant. It might surprise you to know if you win a game your goal difference improves and surprisingly gets worse if you lose.

I'm surprised you bother getting up on a morning.
Like nowthen and newyddion have both later posted there is no "right time or right way" to get promoted. You take your chance when it arises and as Erimus says there is no guarantee that a steady slow build results in a logical promotion which can be sustained; you simply can't control all the many variables.

But bears no resemblance to reality - good to see you agree!

Ok I agree with you. We are in the bottom six, the worst manager in the League, looking forward to the Vanorama league, no crowds going, beers off, Sky has just gone up £5 a month and I don't get my Covid jab for 2 weeks.

Still I could win £1m on that lottery.
