Ian St John RIP

Another from my youth, RIP St John

Remembering St John been the co-commentator in our fantatsic match at home to Villa on valentines Day 1988
ITVs Big Match cameras were at Ayresome Park to televise the first ever live broadcast of a 2nd Division game in England.
League leaders Villa were the visitors & played their part in what proves to be another highly memorable game in this exciting season for the Boro

I remember when they got Donald Trump to do the league cup draw, either quarters or semis, we drew peterborough or man u depending on which round it was.

St John scored the winner late in extra time of the first FA Cup Final I remember watching.

Have just watched the highlights again on YouTube. Listen out for how the commentator pronounces his name.

He got mentioned in a game last week during commentary as someone was approaching or equaling his goal tally for Liverpool. I wondered what happened to him so spent 15 minutes on his Wiki page.

Grew up watching Saint & Greavsie. Was one of only a few shows you could watch about football.

RIP.

I went to see Saint at Billingham Synners Social Club speaking at a fundraiser for the football club when Tony Lee was manager. Ian St John was a good turn and extremely amiable. Infact, he had time for everyone on the night.
As an aside I recall Tony introducing me that night to "this lad is a top Boro fan," Frankie Bam Bam.
Ian had been a top player and then made the leap to being an established and popular tv star yet he still answered the call to support grass roots football clubs. Quite obviously one of the good guys.

Bob Danvers-Walker, innit?

I have a letter from Ian St. John from 1981
Replying to a mates request to have my name read out on the show telling them how well I was doing as manager of
the team I was running at the time.
He apologised for not being able to do so as they got hundreds of like requests .
Great that I got a reply, wouldnt happen now I doubt.

During the first lockdown I started watching old Saint And Greavsie shows on You Tube and you forget how good they were. What a rapport those two had, it still made me laugh watching it now. It was also really noticable how all four divisions and scotland were covered and all with equal regard. None of this top flight / champions league only matters attitude. One I watched had a feature on Hartlepool playing midweek away at Torquay when Bob Moncur was Poolies manager. Nothing condescending just interesting.
RIP The Saint

I remember the poster outside a local church in Liverpool which said "What will you do if Jesus comes?" Underneath someone had written, "Move St John to inside left and play him at centre forward."
