Dog walkers

Now, I realise many on here will love their dogs and, as owners, will be considerate to others, so this is in no way a generalisation.

On a long walk today that happened to include a circuit of a reservoir - jeez, that bit
was like a motorway for dog walkers. I know they have every right to be there, and so they should be and I have no quibble with that. But -

a) why did they have to let the leads stretch the full width of the footpath, blocking it completely?
b) why do they have to be in groups of 3 or 4, again completely blocking the path ?
c) why do they let their dogs in the water and jump out to shake off every time I am passing?
d) why, when they meet other dog owners, do they have to stop in the middle of the path to chat, again blocking the whole path?
e) and most importantly, why is it such an effin struggle for them, in all the above, to move out of the way when politely asked to do so?!

Or was it just me?

Osmotherly/Sheep Dip?

Far too busy to be pleasant on a day like today. Best avoided. Dog walkers are no worse than anyone else for being slow getting out of the way. Counter point for cyclists approaching a dog walker from behind. We don't have wing mirrors and we won't always hear you coming, if you are on a shared bridleway (you shouldn't be on a footpath at all) show some courtesy. Ring your bell (I know) or let us know politely, dogs can be injured if they collide with a cyclist, this isn't a competition sorry if we spoil your new PB but really, just take it easy.

Dogs getting out of water will shake, best tip is to spot them bracing to shake and give them a yard/metre or so clearance.

No excuse for anyone not picking up after their hounds, they should have their noses rubbed in it. Occasionally, through no fault of your own you might miss your dog's "performance", I appreciate it if people point it out to me and I will apologise profusely as I pick it up.

Just as bad as hanging a full poo bag in a tree or leaving next to the path in a bag 🤷‍♂️
No that is worse, a turd left in (for example) a wooded area will be disposed of by nature in a week or three, plastic bags will be there for quite a bit longer. Forestry England recommend flicking said jobbie into the undergrowth if there are no bins to dispose of it properly.

a) I bet they retract the leads as they see you, I've never seen dog walker do otherwise. It's good that they have it on a lead around people, in busy areas.
b) Could say the same about people, I see tons of large groups taking up full footpaths, and worse, cycle paths, and not leaving ample room for others. It's 1000 times worse in supermarkets, and in there actually causes a health risk.
c) How many times has this happened? I actually own a dog and never get wet by my dog shaking?
d) People chat, non-dog walkers do the same
e) They have a dog, it's not a struggle, it just takes about 5 seconds longer, just be patient, you went to a busy place on a sunny winters day

Seems like you mainly just don't like people being out in the sunshine, just like you were.

We went to Cod beck a few weeks back with the dog. I like to think I'm a responsible dog owner and I understand how the op feels.
Dog owners with the extending leads get on my wick when they don't pull them in, especially ones who think their dog wants to be friends with my dog and the leads tangle.
Also the dog bag thing, there are bins in most places of interest now so it's just laziness or scruffiness to throw them to one side.
Saying that, on my walk that day, a family of 6 were walking line abreast and didn't attempt to move while walking toward us, they were dogless, by the way.

I agree about the walking on a lead and taking up the whole path. I am forever stepping in to the road for a person with a dog on a long lead or a family of 4-5 who can't go single file as you pass.

The dog sh*t is definitely on the rise. I go for a run most nights and I've ran through a turd 3 times in the last week or so. It's 'worse' as running trainers have deep grips.

I guess light nights are coming so should see them better 😂.

I know its a aimed at a minority of owners but if you're old enough to own a dog you should be able to bag up a turd. It's really not hard.

In my area, the answer to 'b' (above) would be 'safety in numbers'. There is lot of dog-napping going on.
This is why this board is so addictive. You get to see and hear points of view that you would never think of or know yourself. Appreciate it. Still don’t see why they have to always line up like the magnificent seven right across the path though 😊

What a strange conclusion to reach. Oh well

I'm intrigued by the need of all the lockdown walkers who felt that they had to buy a dog to take with them.
I guess it depends on how used to walking you are and how comfortable you are on your own. I’ve hiked all my life and often solo, so I’m always able to motivate myself to get out there. Others may well need a reason to walk or just like the company a dog gives them. Don’t know really, we’re just all different.

b) Could say the same about people, I see tons of large groups taking up full footpaths, and worse, cycle paths, and not leaving ample room for others. It's 1000 times worse in supermarkets, and in there actually causes a health risk. That’s not relevant to my experience today. Nobody else, group or otherwise, blocked the footpath
c) How many times has this happened? I actually own a dog and never get wet by my dog shaking? Twice today. Perhaps you always know where your dog is and know when to keep out of the way. Clever you.
d) People chat, non-dog walkers do the same
e) They have a dog, it's not a struggle, it just takes about 5 seconds longer, just be patient, you went to a busy place on a sunny winters day What nonsense. Difference with the people today was they were so focussed on their dogs that they had little or no awareness of anybody else.

Seems like you mainly just don't like people being out in the sunshine, just like you were. Read the preface to my post

Since I’ve been borrowing a dog once a week or so I’ve noticed just how many bins there are for dogshìt bags. No excuse for leaving them lying around. If you’ve gone to the trouble of bagging it why would you dump it??

I have had bother with dog walkers, cyclists (when I'm walking), walkers (when I'm a cyclist), car drivers, horse riders.

Some people are the problem, whether they're walkers, runners, cyclists, drivers, dog walkers, horse riders, there's no specific group which are great and none which are knob heads.

Most are alright, just accept it and get over it.

Andy, I agree with that; just happens that today it was dog walkers. And you’re right, I am now calm and looking forward to a couple of beers and a bottle of red !
