Band of Brothers

Over the weekend I have sat and watched the ten episodes of Band of Brothers for the umpteenth time and never get sick of it. The horror of war is captured and so is the bond that can only be formed by people going through such horrors. What these guys went through for our freedom is unbelievable and at times you feel like you are going through it with them.

Was there ever a box set made that is better put together than this show.

I have spent a lot of time in Normandy visiting the landing beaches, battlefields and cemeteries. I never fail to be moved by the heroic deeds of the young men & women who gave up so much for the freedom others.

At the end I love the following quote from d*ck Winters: “One day my grandson said to me, grandpa were you a hero in the war? And i said to him no I'm not a hero, but I have served in a company full of them.”

The opening scenes in Saving Private Ryan too! It must be absolutely frightening being in the middle of that. Let's hope the world never tries to tear itself to pieces on such a scale again.

I stood on the beach at UTAH looking up at the gun emplacements and thought I would struggle walking up there through the thick bramble bushes and the steepness of the hill without anyone even shooting at me.

I love BoB and The Pacific. They are not comparable and both amazing in their own right. I think they show how different the war in Europe and the war in the pacific were. There is a line in the final episode of The Pacific about how much more horrific the war in the Pacific was.

Really looking forward to Masters of the Air. They’re casting it now apparently and the timeline for release is late next year last I heard.

Without a doubt one of the best boxsets availible. The production value and sheer amount of young quality actors is amazing. I also love how they have the real veterans.

I've probably watched it 5 or 6 times. Although I admit I never watched it during its original TV run (I'm sure it was on a Friday night? I would have been out on the lash)

The episode that always gets me is Bastogne. Just imagine fighting in what was the coldest winter in years. Just living in a fox hole getting shelled daily whilst wearing nothing but thin cotton uniform....truly horrific

I have watched many documentaries about it and the battle of the Bulge. I think BOB pretty much nails the conditions and eye witness testimony. The crazy thing is the majority of the soldiers at Bastogne fought at Normandy just 6 months earlier. You kind of think 'how did they survive D Day?' yet that was just the start.

The 101st collected many battle honours during WW2 (and more recently Afghanistan) . I'm glad this series highlighted them👍

I always seem to have dust in my eye at this point, not sure why.

I've never seen it, although some of it was filmed on my mates farm and in the countryside round about me, but reading this thread I'm going to give it a go.

Hard to believe Winters isn't a fictional character. Incredible man, unbelievable leader.
Fully agree.... The very definition of 'hero' and leader.

The bit where they storm the bunkers just legging it across no man's land. Its still taught and talked about today in airborne basic training.

A small number are it's equal. None better.

The assualt on a fixed position is still taught at West Point - US Army officer's training. The equivalent of Sandhurst.

Another recommendation here. I watched it again with my other half thinking she would hate it, but at the end of the series she sat and watched it all again. Amazing cast, amazing budget, great writing and it does those who fought and then picked up the pieces in Europe a great honour.

The Pacific is amazing at showing what sheer hell the war in the Pacific was for fighters on all sides, but the characters aren't as developed.

I can also recommend a German series called Generation War which shows the war through the eyes of a group of German friends.

I remember watching Band of Brothers the very first time it was shown on tv. I was in absolute awe at how good it was.
It has everything, the war scenes give you a real feeling of being there, the cast is top class, the music is spine tingling, the interviews with the veterans make sure you know it's real.

I think I had a man-crush on Winters. I never tire of watching it on repeat.
