Dognapping

What is it with people these days, is nothing sacred. Seems to have been a crime on the rise for a while now. My logical brain says if you want a dog you goto the dogs home and get one for free? But I guess these people want specific dog breeds.
Then I think the people buying the stolen dogs must realise they are stolen and that in itself is a crime - if you are a dog lover surely you know how heartbroken it would be to have your dog taken so why then support such a crime.

poor fella in this story, society seems to be plummeting to new lows year on year.

It's simply a money making exercise and no care for the animal is involved at all. They breed them, sell the pups then, once the dog cannot breed any longer, dump the poor thing.

I know that at least some dog homes have stopped giving dogs away at the moment. People were taking them for free and then selling them on.

Prices of dogs and pups skyrocketed during lockdown 1.0. Our neighbour was looking pre lockdown, not sure what breed and it was typically about £700, during lockdown increased to over £2000 for a pup.

With people stuck at home it's been the ideal time for training so demand has been huge and prices have gone loopy. So I can understand why some dodgy types are onto this thinking they can make a killing.

It's shocking😒. Also unlike a bike or other objects a dog could be very much part of the family and it can really effect its owner.

A few years ago my Dad had a springer spanial stolen from outside a shop. He only popped in for 2-3 minutes and it was gone and never seen again. It wasn't just a family pet but he'd spent a fortune getting it trained for Grouse beating.

It really effected him for months. I imagine it probably ended up as some house pet despite never being happier than when it was 'working' on the Moors.

This has been happening before lockdown especially with gun dogs. Country file did a feature about. It was centered around south Somerset and Dorset. My wife would not let me walk ours up to Tescos anymore.
Since lock down and the lack of dogs, its been anytype.
Its just sad people are resorting to this.

Here in Devon courtesy of the local press picking up on a frankly bizarre ‘Facebook theory’, loads of wannabe Miss Marples are saying that cable ties on lampposts/ fences are put there by ner-do-wells to indicate indicate prime dog napping spots.

My local pets lost and found type pages are going into overdrive with paranoid folk posting photos of all the cable ties they have removed from lampposts and thereby preventing someone’s dog getting stolen.

It feels a bit like being in the centre of the evolution of a new urban myth. But the sad thing is is that it has got lots of people needlessly worried in times that are already stressful for everyone.

This kind of stuff happens a lot on a Facebook group for my local area. People constantly sharing "just in case" and "for awareness" despite the original tales coming from many miles away. It makes you worry that it's rife when it's overactive imaginations and more likely due to an opportunistic scrote rather than an international crime lord.

I guess social media does make you more aware of these things - it does feel that this sort of crime is on the increase though.

As to who is doing it it’s hard to tell - there must be some sort of gangs or network but like most crimes I guess it involves people from all walks of life. The police rescued a large number of dogs from a gypsy camp near to me not too long ago but whilst people are rightly up in arms about the gypsies doing this - there must be a market for this sort of thing so you cannot solely blame one group of people.

Up till a few years ago I had a boxer dog and the thought of him being "nabbed" was constantly playing on my mind.

That worry was helped by the fact that I was informed by a fellow dog owner that the small white sign painted on the pavement outside our house was a indicator to dog thieves that a potential target lived in the house.

With regards to the outrageous prices being asked nowadays for pedigree puppies, I paid a reputable boxer dog breeder £600 for our puppy albeit 13 years ago, prices quoted now range from £2.5k to £3k - an absolute disgrace.

If and when I do get another dog it will more than likely be a rescue dog - hopefully another boxer as they are puppies all of their lives - daft as a brush!
