Dog behaviour

Hi, I was wondering if we had any dog experts on here or could recommend any dog behavioural people. We have a puppy 8 months old, who has developed really bad resource guarding, so that he has an object and if you go anywhere near him or the object, he snarls and bites and is really aggressive, it seems to be getting worse, I don't know if anybody has come across this before and if so, how you dealt with it??? many thanks.

Use food to train him to leave an object on your command. High reward treats like bits of chicken to start with. Plenty of patience needed

Encourage him to stop being a Newcastle supporter and tell him it’s not his fault they have a warped mind about themselves which causes his anger and hostility .
Get him following the current Boro team and watch how happy he becomes with a cracking little spring in his feet .

will certainly give this ago, he doesn't really go for dog treats, will try chicken, maybe hot dogs, will give it a go, thanks

Definitely reward him for good behaviour, but he is testing you. It is important that he sees you as number 1 in the pack. You have to be assertive and dominant especially when they are young. Being harder than you think you should be will pay dividends in the long run. He will turn out to be "your best friend".

we got him from Sunderland, so yes it could be an issue, he did watch quite a few mins of the match last night though.....:)

You need to practice replacement behaviour with him for an object of what he thinks is equal or higher value.

best suggestion is a toy or a ball that he likes.

do not go down the food route... as all that will happen is he gets guarding over food in general... so you’re just transferring the guard.

don’t ever try to snatch the item away or use a loud or hard voice. Just calmly offer the the new toy and gently take the other object away.

you need to get him done as well if you haven’t already as it calms them down

This programme, they have exactly the same problem, I can’t remember which episode though.

Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly

He normally sorts them out very quickly!

There's lots of studies out there to show that the 'pack leader' thing doesn't always work, although its always how we have brought our dogs up as pups.
We've just got a new pup, 6 months old, border collie cross staffy (SPCA dog), loves cuddles & farts, took him to puppy school to socialize and then a course of 5 weeks called 'Basic Manners'. Can't speak highly enough of it. Not only did he become better trained for it, I learnt heaps about reward and behaviour. Its not as simple as just replacing the object with food, there's a lot more going on behind the scenes.
