Sports Personality of the Year

You must have been asleep during the 2014 Show then.
I did miss it was in South america during 2014. Must have been a bad year for sport if he won it. They should have just given it to his car as that's the reason he's so successful. The car probably has more personality too

Rashford should not be even close, based on sporting achievement that is. He is being rewarded with an MBE for his charitable work. If he is nominated, he’ll win, but it will be a nonsense for SPOTY.

Lewis Hamilton should win it for me, he won’t though.

A travesty that Ronnie O'Sullivan has never won it.A sporting genius with a personality as well.6th world title this year but still won't be enough.

Controversial figure. Brilliant sportsman (And best ever snooker player in my opinion) but not sure he’s universally liked. I see between snooker and darts the sports can only boast one winner in the history of the Award.

Hamilton won't ever win it. He'll get 2nd or 3rd but he is just not liked enough to win it and I for one am glad of that
The Laureus Sportsman of the Year award is much more prestigious because it is focussed on sporting achievement rather than personality.

Lewis Hamilton won that award this year and I for one am glad of that.

and any notion that sporting achievement comes into it, went when Ryan Giggs won it the year he'd made less than 30 appearances all year and achieved nothing of note.

the word "personality" is very misleading in SPOTY - it's not about who's got the best craic, the most charismatic, the most engaging, etc. It's just a synonym for "person" in this case

It's like someone saying WW1 really was a great war, the best we've ever had. There is a nuance in the words as they have different meanings within the context in which they are used

True. It’s like when they refer to the UKs worst serial killer, surely he’s the best, not the worst. The worst serial killer wouldn’t have even got it together to kill his first victim.

personality noun (CHARACTER)
B2 [ C or U ]
the type of person you are, shown by the way you behave, feel, and think:
She has a very warm personality.

personality noun (FAMOUS PERSON)
B2 [ C ]
a famous person:
The show is hosted by a popular TV personality.

Can we please now move on from using the former when clearly the SPOTY title relates to the latter.
True good point. The public vote as they see fit and the one thing that Ryan Giggs win showed , as a Humpty succinctly put It, it’s not always the best sporting achievement that wins it.

You're right, but it'll fall on deaf ears. Every year we have the same fools misunderstanding the context of 'personality'.

I love how some people think it’s an award for the sportsman with the greatest personality! Especially when they get annoyed that the winner isn’t affable enough!

As incredible as his off duty work has been, and it really has been, he's now a national hero, I don't think Rashford has achieved nearly enough on the pitch this year to win Sports Personality of the Year.

It's surely got to be Hamilton.

If you take sporting achievement out of it, Rashford should walk any award.
............. and if you keep the title "Personality" Hamilton would be no where near it.

More prestigious how? Because the sponsors say so? The fact the Laureus' voting process is a closed shop of a few dozen academy members, doesn't offer any clarity on its voting nomination process, has for much of its existence shunned football, American sports, cricket, rugby, doesn't suggest to me its any more prestigous than BBC SPOTY.

50 years it has been on so far.

13 Athletics wins (no double winners)
6 Motor Sports (Hill and Mansell both double winners)
5 Tennis (Murray the only triple winner)
4 Football, Cricket, Boxing, Cycling.
3 Equestrian, Winter Sports (Skating)
1 Rugby, Golf, Snooker and Rowing.

It surprised me just how many Athletes there have been.
Not that many winners where you shake your head and can't understand.

IMHO Hamilton excels in an elite sport of very narrow concentrated competition, where he is the lead man in the best team with the best equipment. He is brilliant at what he does, no argument.
At the end of his career, a lifetime recognition award would be very fitting. But not for me in 2020 alone.

In this absolutely unprecedented year Rashford has completed a season where he scored 22 times in 44 appearances for Man U and started this current season with 7 in 9.
He has become an England regular.
He has won an MBE and in a very humble, effective and inspiring way changed Government policy in a way most of the population seems to admire.
I say this as anything but a Manchester United admirer.
I think the young fella has been remarkable. To do all that and not get sucked into a world of self importance; to keep on doing it on the pitch. More power to him.

I have little or no interest in it. I'm not sure even the winners will have the trophey out on display as an major honour. It's not what it used to be.

That said if anyone deserves it based on all round achievements then it has to be Rashford. If it's purely sport then it has to be Hamilton (despite having no personality 😂).
