I love it when a MP on £85k plus a year gives advice of food budgeting on what she does. I guess she went to the Marie Aitonette Colllege for Young Ladies.

Again where are the facts that MOST people on low incomes smoke? it might have been true in 1973 but not in 2020 or most poor people are on illegal drugs or most poor people are bad with money. They will be people in these categories but they are not the bulk. And when people make bad descisions that are encouraged to do so by wealthy organisations like bookmakers, processed food manufacturers, door to door money lenders.

As described many times on here the cost of living for people on low incomes has risen faster that for many other groups, such as rent rises, council tax rises, bus fares, energy bills, while some welfare payments have been cut such as working tax credits and freezing of Job Seekers/UC/disability benefits for a lot of years. Not everyone has had the opportunities or have the aptitudes to earn decent salaries.

My daughter showed me a 'discussion' on facebook last night and I felt like puking. The sheer amount of people who feel that 'welfare claimants' spend most of their money on cigs and beer was just astonishing. Very depressing.

Nice solid input 👌

Well I guess that's the point universal credit and child benefit is meant to address all minimum standards of living.

I have previously worked in welfare to work and the things people believe to be a necessity are just ridiculous... They will count sky, cigarettes and alcohol above feeding their children for example.
I bet by the time you’d finished your hard days graft dealing with these layabouts you were ready for your pint with all your black and gay friends!

Further to my Facebook post the other night a lady has got in touch and herself and a friend are wanting to work with me to setup a local community food bank where people will have the option of collecting pre packed meals, seperate ingredients or hot meals.
We've decided on all 3 of those options as some people may not be able to afford utility rates as well as food so we are covering all bases.
Nice one mate

Believing in feeding children is not the sole purview of the Communist.
This highlights the problem we face with a right wing led media throwing phrases like "doogooders", "loony left" and "marxists". But the problem is balanced policies, centrist and soft left, even some soft right is now being classed as "loony left". It's a dangerous problem, which is breaking our national psyche

I agree with the line in the sand argument, and in more sedate times this is pretty much the political struggle at the heart of the two parties. However, we're currently in a 'national crisis' where 'unprecendented times' has led to lots of norms being thrown out of the window - contracts awarded without tender process, a government in thrall to the private sector, huge amounts of money spent on Moonshots - so its galling to see that 'conservative principles of small state' kick in and so many MPs choke on their subsidised lunches when it comes to ensuring the poorest kids get better access to regular meals.

My own position is that as a relatively rich country with a manageable population we're only as strong as the least fortunate people in society, and the state should be there to stop people falling through the cracks because destitution is wholly avoidable. Sickening to see a majority government actively pushing for it, just to 'own the libs' and 'do-gooders'. I even think that the meals at Westminster should be subsidised and MPs should be on a higher salary if it allows people of different walks of life to be able to get involved.

Funnily enough, generally the countries who have adapted that policy are those that have coped best with the crisis.

A couple of points here why does BB just focus on the 2 children who are at the extreme of care what about the other 3998 who live in Poverty in his constituency don't they need FSM in the half term holiday?

I imagine the large team of social workers on the estate are looking after the vulnerable children to some extent, but they can't feed them - is he implying they are not doing this effectively?

There’s a huge fallacy that many Conservative’s and their supporters believe and that is you save money by spending less on welfare when a small amount of money spent at the prevention stage would save a huge amount in comparison to the reaction stage.

They don’t take any kind of holistic or long term approach and do not look at the cost that poverty has in areas such as health care, policing etc It’s a flawed shortsighted view that costs us all.

Around 6 million of the working age population in the U.K. receive some form of benefit, that doesn’t include child support, that’s a significant amount of people, around 15% of state school children are eligible for free school meals, that’s far too many.

Many of those most vociferous in their criticism of those dependent on the state quite happily took their furlough money which shows quite a deep level of self awareness or disregard for anyone but themselves, those that availed themselves of the eat out to help out scheme were happy enough to take advantage of other people’s money to help subsidise their meals, not a criticism of the scheme but of the hypocrisy of some.

Absolutely fantastic what Randy S is doing and total respect and kudos to him, it shows the best of us as a society and a community spirit that governments are quick to say has collapsed when it suits but shows that compassion and care still resonant with enough of us to make a difference. However government should not rely on the kindness of others to make sure our most vulnerable children don’t go hungry, over 40% of child admission to hospitals in the first half of 2020 should some signs of malnourishment, and nearly 5000 children this year have been admitted to hospital suffering from malnutrition, those figures cannot be acceptable in a country that claims to be among the richest in the world.

Remember this government were happy to let 1.3m kids go without additional support throughout the summer it was only the negative reaction it brought that caused that changed and the bizarre admission from Johnson that he wasn’t aware of the Rashford campaign until the day before....he’s known about this for 4 months and still pressed ahead with it.
