Angela Rayner

As a child, I always thought by the year 2020 we would have flying cars, etc. and everyone would want for nothing. Instead, this passage from A Christmas Carol, first published in 1843, seems more apt.

“Are there no prisons?” asked Scrooge.
“Plenty of prisons,” said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.
“And the Union workhouses?” demanded Scrooge. “Are they still in operation?”
“They are. Still,” returned the gentleman, “I wish I could say they were not.”
“The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?” said Scrooge.
“Both very busy, sir.”
“Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course,” said Scrooge. “I’m very glad to hear it.”

This is still happening with the Tories now just different terminology. Last night on Newsnight David Simmonds said the poor always have foodbanks in cases of emergency. The conversation was something like this abridged version.

Kirsty Wark.......A senior Tory told me whether you agree with the lockdown restrictions or not, they put people out of work, many people on minimum wage and they still have to feed their children

The boy Simmo replied.........As we heard from the Secretary of State at the dispatch box there are several resources available to people who find themselves in difficulty including Universal Credit which has been increased, money provided to help local authorities like my constituents, to provide emergency support. We heard about the support available in an emergency situation from food banks and other kinds of benefits available etc etc etc

I cannot believe that in this day and age a member of our Government is telling people to go to food banks. It is absolutely shameful.

Parliamentary Code, A Simple Guide

It is unparliamentary
to use the word 'scum'
when calling out power
for what it has become.

It's also unacceptable
to call someone a liar
as they sit there in the House,
pants undoubtedly on fire.

'Scrounger' on the other hand
is apparently apt
when punishing the needy,
having openly laughed.

'Feckless', 'Lazy', 'Cheat'
are all perfectly ok
thrown at the undeserving poor
to waft the stench away.

'Revolution' is a magic word.
Say it, watch them quake!

I couldn't see that this had been posted, but just to confirm the voting of Teesside MPs and those slightly further afield

Teesside and surrounding areas

Voted against extending free school meals for children

Simon Clarke Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland - to be fair, has never shown any interest in issues of poverty or deprivation and doesn't mention it as a key concern on his website

Dehenna Davison Bishop Auckland - a prominent member of the 'levelling up task force' apparently. Kind of missed an opportunity here.

Peter Gibson Darlington - anonymous man, who seems to be having a nice time as MP: https://www.petergibson.org/news/making-darlington-great-again

Paul Howell Sedgefield - Currently busy today pleading for more government financial support for coach drivers

Matt Vickers Stockton South - hates being disliked and has posted this defending his position. It's not going well:
Jacob Young Redcar - single issue MP, so this isn't really his strong point. Did what he was told to do.

Voted for the motion

Alex Cunningham Stockton North
Mike Hill Hartlepool

MPs in the poorest and some of the most neglected towns in our region coming out against making sure the very poorest kids have a better chance of not starving.

I remember there was some hope that with the landslide victory and shock results in the north east, there would also be some new young talent coming to Parliament to represent the people of Teesside and our little corner of the country. Little evidence as of yet.

@Way_Out_West @roofie1

one of my close family members works in one of said supermarkets and they were unable to stop those people from buying alcohol with the vouchers.

they could have lied to me but not sure what reason they would lie. Maybe there’s a loophole around if they buy one item that isn’t age restricted it allows the vouchers to be deducted off the full shop. I don’t know, it’s only what said person said to me in the summer
Or it's just an urban myth, like free council houses to asylum seekers? If they have evidence of this abuse I assume your relative reported it to the appropriate authorities and if so what was the response?

Are we reporting people on this board who use using iptv

easier said than done

It was reported way back in various newspapers from supermarket staff. You only have to google it. Its old news.

As an employee of a supermarket I would assume it is part of your job description not to engage in illegal activity while at work, if you exchange these vouchers for alcohol that's a disciplinary offence surely? If you feel strongly about it surely you would want to report it. I wouldn't report someone for using iptv even if it was illegal as I don't feel that strongly about it.

I don’t work at the supermarket so it’s not my place to get involved.

the family member I don’t know how much they are allowed to speak up about it or what there company policy is around using the voucher
