Swear filter

Not opened many posts on here. I think I lack imagination. I also wish I could say something more profound, topical or thought provoking.

Was wondering though, why the swear filter on this board? I would guess it’s frequented mainly by adults.

I quite like swearing, it’s quite expressive it’s a hobby of mine.

That and shouting at the telly.
Others have thoughts on this?

Personally I find it offensive to be censored, as a proper Teeside engineer for 40 years why wouldn’t i speak on here as I would at work. All adults and all purveyors of the Teesside language.

Since i also speak Spanish and have dual keyboards it’s easy to f*** over the rules, but I’d rather not, I’d rather be treated as an adult.

What Isn’t offensive to some can be offensive to others. I am no prude and swear as much as anybody but I think it rather refreshing having a Board free from obscenities. You can express frustration, anger, hatred (if you get that worked up) easily with the allowable Vocabulary.

You can swear all you like it just gets bleeped out. Whether or not the letters are actually visible doesn't really matter does it so long as you get it off your chest?

I believe Rob says the advertisers get upset which is weird because this is the only site I post online that has swear filters and many use the same google ad network

We should remember that offense is something that is taken, first and foremost, and not given. If somebody finds something offensive .. whatever that may be .. then that's an issue they need to deal with within themselves and not something we should be curtailing others for.

"What Isn’t offensive to some can be offensive to others"

I hate that logic personally. Going by that logic, nobody would ever be able to say anything because you would always find somebody who is offended by it in some way.

In the words of Stephen Fry, I'm sorry that you're offended.

Ok let’s take that further. Would you swear in front of your kids? I wouldn’t. My kids read this messageboard occasionally. I’m the last person to be offended. Swearing doesn’t offend me in the slightest and I swear as much as anybody but I just think that we don’t need to see the written obscenity. It’s a verbal expression of emotion I agree. Just my opinion.

I’m with Zoo a bit on this. Profanity filters as they are called don’t necessarily protect children from bad language. The Board should come as a warning that these are adult discussions. However it has been long held that the use of filters on messageboards enhance the quality of content and help grow the community.

Personally im ambivalent to it but I can see why the mb owners would wish to retain it.
As said above if you have need to use those words just do an illiteration. We know what you mean. That doesn’t impinge on your freedom

interesting point about your kids reading the board. My Dad never swore when we were kids. It was odd when I first heard him do it. Scarborough away, think it was a cup match. I remember thinking those words didn’t sound right coming from him. However, he worked in heavy industry so probably did it all the time.

I remember being given a right telling off from a guy behind me in the Holgate end for swearing too much during a game. I was young and put in my place, mortified and embarrassed I can tell you that I apologised for clearly spoiling his day. Filters in the ground, filters in the forum, I don't have a problem with.

Swearing can be a fantastic edition to a sentence if used correctly. The problem comes when people use it as a filler (to replace erm, ehh etc..) then it becomes rather weak and pointless

I don't swear, never swore at work I've worked there for over 30 years, or home, my work colleagues swear all the time, I just chose not to, it doesn't offend me one bit, it would if it were aimed at me but not in normal conversation
I don't understand why people would want to swear all the time, infront of people, on here, but each to their own
