twitter

Both platforms have changed so much from what they were originally released as. I've been on Twitter for 11 years, but very rarely use it now. FB I have but haven't posted in 3/4 years. Everyone on there who posts usually just spouts bile, hatred and bigotry. Once upon a time I would have seen both Twitter / Facebook as core parts of my marketing strategy, however now I can barely bring myself to post for commercial purposes and use them both more as customer service hubs to deal with enquiries.

The only platform I use now actively is Instagram (and Linkedin for Business), where at least I keep it so I'm seeing images of things that interest me (countryside, food + drink) and don't have to see retweets from people like Hopkins or images of a wall of text with an English / British flag telling me how the Asian community is going to turn the UK into a caliphate by someone who can barely string a sentence together.

Twitter is a cess pit. I think I lasted a whole day on there and deleted. There are some horrible people out there.

Absolutely. There are ****. in this world. There always have been, there always will be. I don't publish my phone or email as I don't want to be contacted by said ****.. Same reason I don't have a Twitter account.

See trump doesn't bother me that much as I see him as a symptom. Twitter is a cause. It's highlights poisonous diatribe by extreme individuals and gives them a platform. If I were put in charge of BBC, my first edict would be to stop using Twitter feeds as news.

I must say, my facebook timeline is nothing like people on here describe theirs. Mine is full of decent, reasonable people. I have a few brexiteer friends, we disagree on that issue but otherwise they're decent sorts whose opinion I don't happen to share and that's fine.

But the minute anyone starts spouting or sharing racist/anti-foreigner crap, they're gone. My life is just too short to read such nonsense every day. I wouldn't sit with such people in a bar, so why would I do it online? As a result I only interact with people with whom I'd happily share a couple of drinks. Apologies if any of this sounds snobbish or condescending, it's really not meant to, but I have found that life is so much nicer when you surround yourself with nice people.

The "liberal left" are the most vile individuals if you don't conform to their world view. There's simply nothing liberal about them. It's these types that have hijacked the Labour party and why I have so much apathy towards the party now

Agreed. Quite like facebook but twitter is another ball game!

I don't think the people you're referring to would even describe themselves as 'liberal left'. I suspect you're talking about the hard left.

Twitter is a truly horrible place for people to pedal their extremist views on life, politics and anything else.

If you come from a left leaning standpoint you are ok but anything vaguely patriotic or right of centre will have you labelled as "RWNJ" or banned for your views, hence, many people leaving for Parler. As mentioned above - It is a great source for footie info and news, so if that is what you want it for, don't read the political stuff!

Liberal left are vile? You need to stand and watch a Far Right gathering mate. Then you'd really know what vile is.
I agree the far right are vile, but the liberal left have become in my opinion worse and potentially more dangerous. The far right aren't taken that seriously in the main and aren't given much airtime. What the left are doing in the US at the minute is domestic terrorism, no other word for it, but they are being praised by the media and held up as some great beacon of light. They're dangerous and are now far worse than the far right

Couldn't disagree more...

Social media is the great revealer of a person's soul.
Family, friends, people you think you've known your whole life pour out their anger, hatred and what lurks in the dark corners of their minds.

Recently on social media i've stopped following a close family member and an extremely close friend over their frankly abhorrent outbursts and utterly crackpot conspiracy theories. I have unfriended former friends who implied that I am this or that because of my political leanings.
It is extremely useful, social media, but it's also a portal for dangerous false information, hatred, and torch and pitchfork virtual vigilantes.

Friends Reunited anyone?

I find Twitter excellent. I'm far more informed via Twitter than I am via the mainstream media. I'm more informed than most MP's in fact. That's because I like to listen to experts and there are some excellent ones on Twitter.

Statistically I think Facebook is worse for spreading rubbish than Twitter.

I suppose that pre social media, it didn't matter what views your friends and family held. I can honestly say that I respect everybodies views and wouldn't "de-friend" anybody for their beliefs.

I disagree with just about all that and genuinely I don't really understand how you can reach these views.

The far right not taken seriously and aren't given much airtime? They're in government here and in the US. Boris has done daily press briefings for months, how much more airtime could they want?

Quite. And in the years leading up to the brexit vote, Farage was Question Time's most regular guest.
