The core squad to build around next season

And a few others who could develop and stake their claim.

These, plus a few more quality additions and a lot more luck with injuries and we’re on to something good.

I'd add the two left backs - Bangura and Engel should be given a chance.

And I think Coburn is good enough to be in a promotion chasing squad.

At least one of those aforementioned players won’t be here next summer - possibly three or even four in fact

Sign Ayling on a permanent deal and try to get O'Brien back on loan.

If Forest stay up they'll see him as being surplus to requirements and will just want him off their books for another season.

I’ve found O’Brien to be somewhat underwhelming so far to be honest. He lost the ball in bad areas a few times against Leeds - i think we need someone a bit better really

If we did bring him back on loan I'd expect him to be back-up for Hackney - I'd like to think our midfield pairing will be Hackney playing alongside a new defensive mid next season. Having Howson and O'Brien as cover would give us real strength in depth in that area (I'd look to sell Barlaser).

I guess a lot of it will depend on just how desperate Forest will be to offload him. I don't know what percentage of his wages we've been paying this season but I can't imagine we've been paying his full wages.

He’ll be on much bigger wages than we can offer so there’s no chance he’ll be coming here in a permanent deal, unless he’s willing to take a big pay cut, which i doubt he would

Yeah I'd only be looking to bring him back here on loan, so that we only have to pay a certain percentage of his wages.

As I said, a lot of it will depend on whether Forest stay up and whether they'll be desperate to get him off their books. I can't see any other Championship clubs being willing to sign him on a permanent deal.

I do feel O'Brien has really been putting in the effort these last few months, which could suggest that he's hoping we look to retain his services for another season. The fact that Carrick is still choosing to play him ahead of one of our own players (Barlaser) could also suggest that he may be hoping O'Brien can be part of his plans for next season.

I think most of the existing squad is good enough to play a part next season, just maybe not a core part of it.

Certainly the three you’ve mentioned, plus glover, Tommy smith, Barlaser and Silvera.

I would look to move all four on to be honest, not good enough even as back up, for a team looking for promotion. Maybe with the exception of Smith if he stays fit.

McGree is a crock. He’s had a shocker of a season for someone who should be coming into his prime. I don’t really see who’d come in for him.
He is one of the better footballers on our books and there was a lot of interest in him at the start of the season which apparently turned his head.

Regarding 'crocks', we've had a squad full of them this season, with a better team on the treatment table than we have fielded. McGree was one of them who had a stop-start season due to injuries. Plantar Fasciitis is very painful just to walk, never mind playing football on it.

The key is obviously holding on to our star players.

There's a lot of talk of us trying to follow the Brentford model but when you look at a lot of their big players at Championship level they managed to get at least two seasons out of them. The likes of Watkins, Benrahma and Mbuemo all stuck around for more than one season despite interest from bigger clubs.

Whereas we have Akpom leaving after one good season and Rogers doing one after half a season.

We have to find a way of getting an extra season out of those players that are attracting attention. Dieng, RVB, Hackney, Mcgree and Latte Lath are the spine of the team when fit. The club need to show enough ambition to convince them that we are worth one more season under Carrick. After that if they have performed and a big club comes in you wouldn't begrudge them a move. But if it all falls apart again this summer and we have to re-build again its going to be another slow start next season

O'brien was very good last night. He's on his way back from a long term injury so you also have to factor that in to the equation. I'd prefer to keep him but it depends on how much Forest want for him.

I get the impression McGree will be gone but i think we'll keep hold of Hackney. I think Gibson was happy to let Rogers go on the proviso that we can rebuff offers for Hackney. I'm happy with that.

Obrien made a couple of forward runs last night that were great. Showed real vision. The sort of runs that leave a player stranded if we lose the ball. Great when they come off though.

we will do extremely well if we keep hold of Hackney, McGree and VDB.

My guess is that we will lose at least the first 2.

Yep, “breaking the lines” as they say. Just carrying the ball 20 yards can take 3 or 4 opposition players out the game

It’s something Hackney does well too. I do wonder if they would be too similar to play as a pair
