Maddo constantly criticising Engel

I agree Giles was 100% better than Engel going forward if you compare Giles last season to Engel this season. No disagreement there, but have you seen any of Giles this season?

Defensively, based on real statistics from multiple websites, Engel is better than Giles.
I haven’t seen much of Giles this season, I’m going off their seasons with us. I think Giles is a better footballer and better-suited to how Carrick wants his team to play.

I use WhoScored as a guide for stats and they actually have Giles’ season with us and Engel down as 6.81 across the season. Engel has four assists, Giles 11. From what I’ve seen of both of them, I’d choose Giles.

Doesn't this back up my point...

You clearly rated Giles very highly last season.

The guide that you use for rating players rates Giles last season and Engel this season exactly the same...

But you're still blindly claiming Engel isn't good enough and Giles is better?

I’ve explained why I prefer Giles. The stats are a useful guide but they’re only that. On top of that you go off what you actually see. I’m saying I think Giles is a better footballer and more comfortable in possession and more productive going forward, and I think he is a better fit for a Michael Carrick team that Lukas Engel.

The stats show these two lads are quite similar. I don’t think I’ve really been very critical of Engel tbh, I’m just not sure if he’s our long-term man under Carrick. I have a sense Carrick is still working it out as well because in two of the last four games he’s chosen to have a look at Thomas and I’m sure we’ll see Bangura now as well.

I don’t think Engel is sh*t. But not am I completely convinced by him. I’m not sure he’s what we want if we want to go up. We’re well off the pace in the second division, there are big question marks against a large number of our senior players imo.

I will be extremely surprised if we don’t bring in a new first choice left back for next season. I will not be surprised to see Engel moved on.

He doesn’t always put him in the team though. He’s left him out recently. I don’t think he ever left out Ryan Giles?

I’m not saying Carrick doesn’t like Engel but just adding that he has left out of the team a few times when nobody expected it. I don’t really think he’s fully convinced by him either tbh. I think that *probably* goes for quite a few of our players though imo.
There is a rumour that engel is carrying a knock. Though I take your point, particularly earlier in the season.

I don't think anyone is suggesting engel is perfect. He used to often play a pass blind and into dangerous areas. That seems to have been sorted, hopefully. He isn't the best 1 on 1 but then he shouldn't really be left isolated by the left winger in front of him.

What some of us contend with is that he is not good enough for a promotion chasing team. We have much bigger gaps in the squad to address in the summer before we get onto lb.

I agree, and everyone is entitled to their opinion on all our players.

I do think we have worse positions to worry about in the summer though, and a LB replacement wouldn't be on my list... I'd be surprised if Engel isn't playing most games next season.

I tend to agree that giles was very well suited to how we played last season and the players we had.

Put Giles in this team and he would struggle. In fact put any fullback on our left and they will struggle. We are too weak through the middle, get no support from the left am and loose the ball too early when engel is often beginning a run and making himself available.

I would broadly agree with the last 3 or 4 posts. He has a very good attitude and never shies away. He is offered precious little protection from the player(s) in front of him. He’s also playing next to Clarke whereas we had Giles with Lenihan. Again, I like Clarke, but I prefer Lenihan in our team. I think he was integral last season. I think that pairing works better in a Carrick team than Clarke and Engel.

I said a couple of weeks back then left back would be way down the list of priorities this summer. We need 4, 5, 6 quality players and if there’s enough money left after that to sign a better left back then I would hope we did it.

He isn't untouchable viv. If we can find better for the right money. We may already have better in bangura.

I am looking forward to seeing him again. Frightening pace and in the little bit wet have seen can cross a ball too.

On that subject Engels assist for lath against hull was a thing of beauty.

Oh and Giles’s pass completion record last season was 78.4 and Engel’s this year is 79.1

Saying you prefer Giles to Engel must be when comparing him on last seasons form as he has hardly played this season.
Last season we had a totally solid right side, Lenihan at LCB all season, McGree or Ramsey in front of Giles, Hackney and Howson solid in the middle, Akpom in 10 role and Archer up top to finish. Also a team playing with confidence all season.
Put Engel in that team instead of Giles and I am 100% sure he would have been just as good as Giles if not better.
Put Giles in the team this year instead of Engel with anyone of 6 different starting center backs (due to injuries) alongside him and Greenwood or Silvera in front of him, no 10 and no forwards. How many assists do you think Giles would have this season.

Maddo did play full back a lot and knows the role.

I like to see Engel take a defending player on occasionally and kept them to commit to a challenge.

Engel is physically strong especially when in movement, but he is not fully using that strength, for me.

I watched the Swansea game last week with the BBC Tees comms on.There was a split second, where Lucas decided to check back instead of crossing the ball as there was no one in the box. Maddo described it as Engle "delaying, delaying and delaying". It was a split second when a cross may have been on FFS. No need to repeat "delaying" 3 times. Maddison really gets my goat with his favouritism.

The way he fawns over his beloved star boi Hayden Hackney like a love struck teenager gets on my wires.

On another note, I also wish he'd stop using the 2nd person plural narrative "you" all the time instead of the correct "us" or "them". He even uses the pronoun "you" instead of 3rd party pronouns "he" and "she".

Come to think of it, I think it's the only pronoun he knows. For example all the following are Maddoisms:

"You need to the get the ball across faster" (he needs to).

"You win a few games and you're top of the league" (they win, ie the opposition).

"You play out from the back with these players and you're taking a risk" (we).

You would think someone paid by the BBC for their opinion of what they are actually seeing would have a better grasp of narrative POV grammar. Or at least be educated by someone deep with auntie's department of correction and education.

I fear for the listening kids . 😪

Very harsh criticism, particularly given that Engel didn't play.

But I'm pro-Engel. I've seen on going improvement through the season and I expect him to be our starter next year.

His passing success rate was 88.4%. So to be calling out missed placed passes, seems to support the point
I think Engel is a good work in progress and just like latte lath, we need to be patient and keep supporting him because when he really gets going I think he’s gonna fly like lath currently is. There is plenty of good signs from him!
