Ajay Matthews - Fabrizio Romano

He played 254 minutes at 17 years old. Come on. Give the lad a chance.

He was playing for England. He obviously wasn't sh1t. Even if he didn't look the best in the very limited chance he got. He's took.his chance at Swansea and there's been PL interest. Barely got a chance with us.

Mental how people want to give players like Engel a full season of matches despite him being garbage to adjust to the culture and see if he improves at 25 years old but can't wait to write off a 17 year old England school boy because he had a ropey start to his senior career.

That’s the thing though. He was 17 and wanted to be playing regularly but didn’t want to go out on loan again.

Fair enough if he was 19 like VDB and demanding regular football, but not at 17

He was 19 when he went and walked straight into the Swansea team and played 40 games.

He started 2 games at 17 and a couple of sub appearances.

Never played at 18.

Sold at 19
I'm pretty sure he actually made his first appearance before he was 17. Wasn't he Boro's youngest ever player?

But then we decided he was sh1t after 2 starts.

I think he probably played before he was really ready for it due to his physicality. He was a big unit even back then. That probably made him think “if I made my debut at 16, why am I not playing at 18??”

Anyway, if he gets a big money to the prem in a couple of years because he’s class, we’ll be quids in. If he never gets beyond champo level, no harm done.

I personally think it’ll be the latter.

I would also add, a young centre back had next to no chance of regular first team football under Warnock. I think Carrick will play youngsters if they’re good enough.

Well you would wouldn't you...
Then you're made aware of interest at other clubs who will give you a run. What would you do?

There's nothing to base that on really other than hope or gut feeling. The two players that he has played (Coburn and Hackney) had already broke into the setup before he arrived. Although he has stuck with Hackney.

I'm not sure how much enthusiasm there was to really integrate Josh this season. It's been confirmed that we were intending on loaning hin out. He's been used out of necessity rather than a real appetite to integrate a youngster.

Time will tell but no new youngsters have broken into the team since he arrived.

If Swansea don’t sell him in the summer, we’ll get nothing as he’s out of contract at the end of next season.

He played 2 games for us. Is that all they get now? Don't set the world alight in 2 matches, then you are sh1t. We obviously got it wrong.

He was just an example. None of them are getting chances.

Sonny Finch has Had 9 mins
Kavanagh had 7 mins
McCabe has had 3 mins

They're not getting chances because right now they're not good enough. Kavanagh's gone to League 2 and he's average at best.

Your argument with Wood is based on having the power of hindsight.
Luongo didn't play for us either - now he's joint top of the league with Ipswich - but none of us fans would have put him in our team at the time.

Wood played quite a few cup games for us, against Crewe, Mansfield, Blackpool.... and he was rubbish in all of them.

We had a back 3 at the time that went on a 9 game unbeaten run - a run that hasn't been beat since (Carrick could equal it tomorrow).

What was our manager supposed to do? - Forget about the best defence we've had in years, let's stick a 18 year old CB on, whos been rubbish against lesser teams, because he's spat his dummy out and wants to leave if we don't?

They do but a failure in their academy might still be a championship player where a failure for our academy will be playing at Spennymoor.
I’m not sure if it’s still the case but a couple of years ago we had produced the second most championship players in the country, Man United were first.

Even producing lads who go on to play for Spennymoor shouldn’t be seen a failure, that’s a harsh word to use. They’re going on to do what they love whilst earning a decent living at a decent level.

If we can produce players who go on to play in League One/ Two whilst picking up little fees then the academy is doing it’s job well enough. We can’t expect a crop with the likes of Downing, Johnson etc constantly coming through.

That stat was Jonathan Woodgate in 19/20...

He gave debuts to Hayden Coulson, Djed Spence, Aynsley Pears, Nathan Wood, Ben Liddle, Stephen Walker, Tyrone O'Neill.
He also put Hayden Hackney, Connor Malley and Paddy Reading on the bench for the first time, and Sol Brynn on the bench in the cup.

Nathan Wood is a player who seemingly got frustrated with lack of first team opportunity at 19 so moved to Swansea. Despite us playing a back 3 that season which regularly contained Peltier and Dijksteel.

He was transferred rather than not signed on but it's a player we lost because we didn't give him first team football. Straight in the first team at Swansea.
Thankfully he's not in our side. Let's see where he ends up, was awful last week at the Riverside.

Brahimi is 24 and playing below our level.

This idea that they need to be ready. We’ve been treading water for large swathes of the season. There’s been long stretches when Barlaser, McNair, Fry, Greenwood, Silvera, Thomas, Engel and Ayling weren’t ready if we’re going off performances. Some of them still aren’t and, if promotion is our aim, never will be. And yet they get chance after chance after chance.

We absolutely need to blood some of this current batch before the end of the season. How can we expect managers and coaches in League One or Two to sign them on loan and play them if we won’t give them a chance ourselves. Not even 10mins. The first-team has a role to play in their development and right now it isn’t doing that. As I said earlier in the thread, if a category 1 academy isn’t producing anyone ready to play 10, 15, 20mins for a first-team whose chances of promotion were all but done by Easter then there’s something very wrong.

“If they’re not being picked then they’re not good enough,” well maybe we should apply that line of thinking to the first-team players as well.

Greenwood, Thomas and Ayling have been playing for a contract, they needed that chance. Alying took it

Silver ma and Engel are acclimatising and again needed the game time

Agree on the others though
