Marten de Roon

Yes, yes, he was sold due to fan opinion, and nothing to do with his not wanting to play second tier football, the club wanting to offload a big contract, or the club being offered a decent fee for him...
He received al kinds of abusive messages etc from a section of of our ‘fans’, including threats against him and his family

You must have missed Bournemouth away. Never forgive him for that display.
He got sent off for trying to win a free kick and a foul that wasn’t even a foul never mind a yellow. I just never thought it was as bad as everyone made it.

He wanted away and nobody could see beyond that, in my honest opinion.

I must have been watching a different De Roon when he played for us.

People have always said he was a good player for us, i don't buy that personally, i was always massively underwhelmed by him.

Reason why......well, we obviously signed him as a defensive midfielder/"destroyer", and he quite simply wasn't doing the job well enough - hence why we pushed him further forward and reverted back to the clayton/leadbitter partnership.

Don't get me wrong, he scored some memorable goals (sunderland at home and city away) for us, but i don't think he was that great for us by any stretch.

Clearly a good player in general though.
Agree with this. He never bossed games for us even on the occasions we did use him in his main position. I think people often forget that the Serie A standard is not what it was, and it certainly isn’t the PL.

That said, he is obviously doing much better for them than he ever did for us (before and after) and is a perfectly good footballer, hence why he has had some good games in the CL, and we clearly misused him for at least some of that season.

Let’s face it, Karanka absolutely lost the plot that season and by the end he didn’t have a clue what he was doing. Did well up until then though.

Wasn’t he still a very young player when he came to us? I had him down as a developing player who would grow with experience.

I thought he did well in a team that strangely gave up after a decent first half of the season. And I thought he went because he had just started getting picked for Holland and the championship was a step down. Don’t remember any hassle from supporters myself.

Took him about a dozen games to adapt to the Premier league but then he ended up playing in a team where the manager was losing the plot. In some ways he was a Mustoe type: he got on with his job effectively but at that point we needed a Boateng type to boss the team. He was too inexperienced and too quiet a personality for that.

I thought he was poor as well. He just ran about a lot without doing a great deal.

As you say, clearly he is a good player, and it was hard for anyone to shine for us in that season, but I really wasn’t having him.

Always looked a good player and a cut above that side. Stood out as he didn't really have much quality around to play off.

As for playing further forward, I'm not sure that was 100% by design. Always looked to me that we didn't have the quality in that area of the pitch so he was taking it upon himself to get forward. I don't recall him actually starting as a 10 for us?
