Tonight’s man of the match

Our better players for me today were the centre backs, Ayling on the right and the midfield pair.

Greenwood had a good second half but a poor first.

What is funny about my comment @indeedido. Bit confused as to how saying Barlaser has a really big influence today is false. He clearly did.

Him and O’Brien dominated.

I think we played a hybrid between 4231 and 541 today.

Ayling played relatively narrow and attacked less (but still did). We live in a world where a perfectly symmetrical formation is not really a thing.

You have a fluid formation with options for flexing.

I think playing a more formal 541 for a few games has found us a more solid way to flex the 4231 system and we are overall less attacking. Which means we are conceding a lot less.

Totally agree, we’ve played an “asymmetrical” 4 at the back that turns into a 3 at the back ever since Carrick arrived.

Left back more attacking, allowing the left mid to come inside. Right back more defensive and the right mid generally hugging the touchline more and playing like a traditional winger.

We’re allowed to disagree on what we see.

Of course. Still wouldn’t say it was a comment that is in need of a laughing emoji. Especially when I would say it’s in pretty broad Agreement Barlaser had a rare very good game.

Quality from the geordie Pirlo today
He played well today Barlaser but has he ever had a shot for us? Genuine question. There's been loads of times this season when he's had the opportunity to get a shot away but he just never does.

I keep umming and aahing about whether I actually want us to offer Ayling a permanent contract.

He's been good for over a month now and I like him.

He'd not sign if he wasn't guaranteed game time, which is the one question mark for me.
In an ideal world we'd need a younger player as our first choice right back, especially with a Smith still on the books too.

Dijksteel is clearly on his way out, he put in absolutely no effort when he came on today and Carrick has never fancied him.

He’s improved considerably from his first few games.

Very reliable performer now, to the point where you don’t really think about him. Bit like Smith is / was.

I think he actually offers a bit more than Smith now tbf

I like Ayling I’d sign him. Can’t see Smith coming back the same player maybe loan him out for the season if we can. Sell Dijksteel and sign someone to compete with Ayling.

Why are you so bothered?

I thought Barlaser was how he always is against a very poor side, given acres of space and plenty of time to try and spray the ball around. He does so little with his time and space.
He creates little and is never threatening.
I think if you hold your breath for him to shoot when he has the opportunity then you will make a fabulous pearl diver.

4 assists in his last six games now! Ever present part of a defence that has only conceded 2 goals in those six games too, and one of them was offside!
I'm undecided too mind...

Cos I’d like to see people explain their thoughts rather than just laughing. He had a really good game today in my view against poor opposition. I don’t trust him to do it consistently but I feel he deserves credit today.

I think it’s a no brainer, he’s been excellent.

Barlaser
O’Brien
Howson

I honestly thought Greenwood was as sh**e as usual. Holds on to the ball too long, always loses out in the dribble, ball-greedy and slow. Don’t get what people have seen in his performance today 🤷‍♂️
