Matthew Hoppe

With all the injuries he still can’t get a place on the bench. He must be horrendous.
Its a bit strange, as he was on the bench for 2 away games not long ago, but then youngsters replaced him in the next home one - and then he's not featured since
He was in the stand at home matches just before the 2 away ones where he was in the 20 - and was included in our 25 man squad (admittedly there was nobody else) - so he's either injured or seemingly never going to get a runout

Great to see Gilbert come on today and set up the goal, hopefully he can push on with a few decent displays between now and the end of the season. Hoppe is a shame, had high hopes for him when he joined.

Waste of money whatever he cost. Seems a good lad but clearly not at the level required sadly.

Wonder if the Hoppe situation is connected to performance related payments? If he’s on some sort of per game bonus or the fee goes up after so many games and he’s under that for now.

Whatever the reason to be fair to the player he hasn’t kicked up a fuss yet so he’s probably not a bad egg.
Yes that’s what I thought he’s been completely bombed out. It’s very common for fees to be appearance related these days. You’d think after a couple of poor years that hoppes would be. Might be lucky and get rid for just 1m loss

I also think it must be related to the structure of initial fee.

Very few fees in football are now £2million up front.

I suspect if he plays/scores we owe more money - so he will only play in extremis. This has screwed over a few players.

I think there was an article on the athletic or something similar with an agent arguing that players would possibly have a case to break contract because they are not being played for reasons outside their control effecting future earning potential. Waiting for a Bosmanesque case to go to CAS at something.

Why would he be on the bench at all though if anything to do with his fee or contract was going to affected? It makes no sense to include him, not bring him on and then leave him out completely because it might cost you money to play. You just wouldn’t put him on the bench full stop.

He’s still probably quite a way under the trigger point. He’s made just 6 appearances for the first team. So can still keep him around but if we’ve decided to cut our losses the. We will only put him on the bench in an emergency. We’ve had a few emergencies recently.

His time here is done, he will be released
