A recent study points to the role of a specific brain region.
There was a huge redundancies in this sector when the Roman(Tories) decide to streamline things, bringing in the worshipping of Gods act in around 313 AD.
This had huge consequences for not only the many Gods, who had little to do after this was brought in, but also the statue makers and temple keepers and the high Priestesses. These workers were just thrown on the scrap heap. They later found work within the monotheist temples that were set up on the estates. This was well before it realised this franchise was very lucrative.
There were objections made in the senate at the time with a lot of, "where has all the collection cash gone?" but this was later silenced.

Reminds me of my all time favourite comedian Groucho Marx.
He had been invited to a posh society dinner and the Roman Catholic Bishop of the area stood up and said 'I would like to thank Groucho for bringing so much fun into this world'
