Three at the back.

We have players that can hurt opposition up top if they play their best game. Defensively we needed work and the change seems to have worked, as a unit they were superb today

I think our midfield 2 were not offering good enough cover when we were playing 4231 (one or both of those players need to be defensive minded for that to really work).

I think 3 at the back gives a bit more freedom to Howson and O'Brien. And cover for the full backs to take more risks. If you switch Jones for Ayling I also think it would also allow to play in a more attacking nature than it has so far been used.

It’s ridiculous that he took so long to go with it really but he got there in the end. Onwards and upwards.
It gives you encouragement ahead of next season though, as I feel he'll be more willing to switch formations when things aren't going well.

This should have taught him something.

Everyone been saying it since the Villa game that we are much better suited to it. Stick with it til now to the end of the season and we’ll have a chance.

It depends who the 3 are though. Today we had both Clark and McNair pushing on into midfield with VdB being more disciplined. Having those two on their good foot really helped support the midfield when we attacked in the second half.
It'll hopefully be a feature of the 3 at the back that we'll work on as it stops it being negative, especially at home when the onus is on us to take the game to teams.
The more options we have, the better we'll do.
I still think we'll see a few high profile exits in the summer due to our financial issues so hopefully we are planning our recruitment accordingly and we'll get players in that'll be comfortable in either formation.

With a full strength team I don’t think it is the best option, with who we have available it definitely is.
I'm not sure. Who are we still missing that would make a difference now? Hackney and Jones?

Jones definitely suits 3 at the back as much as he does the 4. Can't see it making much difference to Hackney either, just as good either way I'd have thought.

However I don't think Carrick sees us playing it long term. But I think we need new signings in to be able to go back to 4231 and be consistent with it.

Overlapping centre backs? It'll never catch on.

Everyone of Dieng, Clarke, RVDB, McNair, Engel, Ayling, Howson and O'Brien benefit from playing 3 at the back.
Whilst they are our best options for starters, needs sticking with IMHO.
