Thrown under the bus!!

Chris Wilder would throw anyone under the bus to protect himself - he got slated and rightly so!!

Michael Carrick and the other hand protects everyone in his squad and very rarely says anything bad about his team - he is getting slated by certain sections of the crowd and media

I think we all understand he is a rookie in terms of management and he has made some mistakes throughout his first full season but that's what it is, his first full season.

Its also about time some of our squad looked at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves " am I giving my all for the manager and this club "

It's easy to put the blame on the manager but we have players in that squad who play high level international football and a few that are touted at joining Premier league clubs either this summer or the near future!!

Steve Gibson has thrown Carrick under the bus by not backing him in the transfer market, selling his best assets and replacing them with rubbish!!

Some of them players are also doing the same letting him down and are clearly not performing for him on a consistent basis!!

As far as I can see the only person getting thrown under the bus at the minute is Michael Carrick!!

We don't have to go nuts with the fax machine, but we have to have investment in “quality”, otherwise what limited “quality” we do have will Foxtrot Oscar!
It's become clear over the last three months, [as you watch Carrick's body language], slight change of posture and sharpness in response to various key questions, that he isn't “happy.” His squad is what it is, but he's frustrated at what [he?] hasn't achieved in two transfer windows. There have been issues with other clubs believing Boro will part with big dollars to buy players, but neither have profited: we have gaping holes in the squad and those clubs have let greed colour their judgement. I'm not sure whether he had a two and a half year contract, because if he did, if he doesn't get reinforcements on the pitch, it will be his last. Our current squad resembles a second-hand car dealers on Skippers Lane industrial estate.

End of last season I said we should keep Akpom at all costs. If we had done and Gibson had spent a bit of money and strengthened we would now be challenging for automatic promotion. Instead we sell Akpom, Crooks and Rodgers. No doubt we will sell Hackney in the summer. We are not gong to get promoted any time soon. Gibbo has done alot for the club, but he no longer has the ambition/money, or is prepared to dip into his personal fortune sufficiently to finance success. I feel sorry for Carrick. We played some wonderful football last season and with the right backing we could really go places. I wouldn't be surprised if he is off to a PL club in the summer.

The thing I don't understand is why we have some excellent results and some really awful performances. If the players were actually rubbish then Leicester would have really turned us over. That they didn't means that the squad of players are not as bad as Saturdays performance would suggest.

Whatever the squad, nobody can argue that Saturdays performance was way off what the squad can achieve. That has to be down to Carrick.

Keeping Akpom would have cost 12 million and guaranteed nothing. That's some risk.

Alternatively we could have spent that money and Akpom had either thrown his toys out of the pram to get a move in January, got injured in September or had a loss in form. There are no guarantees in football. Additionally, we would still have to contend with three very strong relegated sides in Leicester, Leeds and Southampton. We might have been challenging but we would lose Akpom at the end of this season for nowt and still fail to go up. No guarantees.

It's alot easier to play the top sides for us it has been all season we are good at counter attacking football. But what happens it the bottom sides give us 70% the ball sit back defend then when we misplace a pass that happens alot they sneak in and score. We simply have no idea how to break down low blocks at the Riverside at the moment

That's just football. There's always an element of luck. If a team is better than another and plays well they will usually win but Leicester had an off day when we had a good one. Even then, they had 24 shots on goal, 4 big chances and on another day some of them go in. We had 5 shots on goal and only 2 big chances but we scored both of ours. They had an xG of 2.12 and we had 1.04. Statistically we should have lost.

Teams playing well and statistically being better will win more often but there's always a chance.

I do think if we just went out last summer and kept Akpom signed Giles Ramsey Archer spent the 40 million or so we would of got promoted this year. I feel this in the long run would save us a fortune as we will lose this over the next 2 seasons anyway. But Gibson has lost the will to spend big any more we are fixated on FFP it's a joke really.

I can't imagine Gibson will ever be willing to spend that sort of money again whilst we're in the Championship, keeping in mind what happened the last time we invested heavily, in our quest to "smash the league". He probably still has sleepless nights thinking about Monk's tenure at the club.

I do agree though that we should have either signed one of the loan players on a permanent deal, or offered Akpom a deal he couldn't refuse.

I personally felt Giles was the player we should have signed, it just felt right, and at £5m I think it would have been a snip.

It was definitely disappointing that we didn't sign any of the loanees, and we've essentially had to build a new team.

Then don't try to. That's the managers job, which is my point.

Agree with alot of the OP regarding management styles etc.

Dont agree with this comment though.

We have spent.

I would guess circa £15 million ish since the summer -maybe even more.

The club is losing money, and has to balance the books.

I dont doubt if it was the right situation then more money would be spent - Carrick said as much in January, the right player didnt become available so he wasnt wasting the money generated.

That doesnt sound like he wasnt back, sounds like he knows what he wants, and wont settle.

The issue with Akpom, Crooks and Rogers is that they all wanted to move on:

Chuba wanted to move abroad as he was given a chance and had played abroad before.
Crooks wanted to play over in America and take the opportunity for family reasons
Rogers had expressed his desire to play for Villa and had been “pushing” for the transfer as soon as he knew an offer was on the table.

As a club, we are clearly a lucrative ground for other clubs to cherry-pick our better players. That says we are recruiting the right players [not all], but others are aware we will sell for the right price. There is also common knowledge that we [along with many other clubs] have to balance the books and have limited options outside of Steve Gibson.

Bearing that in mind, we either have to expect to sell our best players, or we offer better terms and conditions, such that it gives out a message to other clubs we won't give our players away for peanuts. We must also accept that the recruitment team is doing a good job in that case, and we may have to invest more to progress. We also have to get our academy graduates up to speed and into the first team. Otherwise, what's the point of an academy where we keep off-loading them? Or are we producing academy players to sell on, like a production line and just another revenue stream?

Just a few thoughts ?
