A different transporter bridge.

I was on the train from Copenhagen to Hamburg a couple of weeks ago and I passed what must have been this.

Was very odd to look out of my window in a random part of North Germany and see such a familar shape.

SO how many are there: Bilbao has one, and I think Buenos Aires. Are there anymore?

Rochefort, France.

Not far from La Rochelle. I went out of my way to visit this bridge whilst visiting the Naval Dockyard at Rochefort (very impressive) and the wife thought I had gone mad. I had one of the foster children with me and we crossed it back and forth twice. The girl stayed with my wife and both were not impressed. 🤣 🤣 🤣

All we need is a few million quid and we could do that at the transporter.
Maybe the profits from Teesport could be used? 🤣

World Association

World Association Of Transporter Bridges

The association was set up in 2003 in order to defend, protect and conserve these masterpieces of engineering and industrial heritage. Including 8 bridges, it is based at the Bizkaia Bridge as this is the oldest in the world, as well as being behind the initiative.

Thanks for the link.... (y)

Travel Man with Joe Lycett (and James Acaster) showed the Transporter in Bilbao. They walked across the top and took the crossing. Was really cheap and quick from memory.

I wonder if Teesside is linked with this group? Maybe they have ideas/experience of how to preserve your transporter?
When I went into the cafe at the Rochefort bridge, they had picture post cards of all the transporter bridges from around the world - I seem to remember there were seven in total.

I will try to find out.... there is very little imagery of our Transporter on the website

In the decade that followed, international cooperation revived to back a joint bid for World Heritage status, following the example of the Bizkaia Bridge in 2011 ....

This looks like the Bilbao bridge got World Heritage status. I would guess that goes some way to guaranteeing preservation.

Can you post what you find out? Teesside being part of this group can't be a bad thing. Maybe Rob knows more?
