Plymouth - Making Long Journeys

I'm just watching the cup match between Plymouth v Leeds and Upson asks if the long journeys for Plymouth in league are impacting on their away form. He says, that's a long journey up to Sunderland.

Doesn't Sunderland have to do the reverse fixture? I think he's talking bollox.

Some teams have to travel further than others each season cumulatively though. The season before last, Middlesbrough had the longest journeys in the Championship, and Derby the shortest. We were also the highest supported away team that season.

I agree with you Norman. Plymouth drew at Leeds so their form can't be that bad. There are other clubs in the SW that also have to travel north

1000 more miles than Sunderland over the season. Double the distance of the midlands clubs!
That mileage for Plymouth is a big difference to other clubs. I honestly thought the travel to southern based clubs would have equaled itself out. Looking at the table though, there are several northern clubs and I supposed Sunderland is closer to a lot of Midlands clubs.

Teams fly now for trips over 200 miles - when it was 5 to 6 hours each way on coach it must have been tough.

I know Carrick has said we fly to most away games so the distance is meaningless to the players, he said it's more of an issue for fans which is another reason why the away support is so fantastic.

Not sure if Plymouth will fly but I am guessing they probably do?

It’s the assault on the ears from that mumbling porkmeister Jonathan Pearce that gets my goat. I have turn to the volume right down when he is on. 🤣

I think travelling over double the distance through the season will have an adverse effect on a team to be honest. It's all time off the training ground etc as well as the other negative affects of spending a long time on buses/trains/flights etc.

Boro team got train to london for Chelsea match. Not a flight. With commutes at each end. It's still a 4-5 hour journey.

Carlisle should win every home game by that calculation and lose every away?
Interestingly, that is exactly what happened in 1954.
And to Torquay in 1949.
(Neither of these examples have been checked and are probably untrue).
I wonder if a study of a large sample has ever been properly done to see if there is an actual correlation. Too many other contributing factors to take into account I suppose.

I did know we do trains to London games but the players will be dropped off at Darlo and be at Kings Cross in 2 hours 35 minutes? First Class I imagine - quite different from coach travel over the same distance.

I would be shocked if Plymouth did a coach to say the North of England.

Christ, 261 miles on average!
Clubs in the middle of the country don't know how lucky they are.
Imagine having a load of away trips within a an hour or so drive.

I went to the FA Cup replay in 1991 by train, a 7 hour trip from Darlington, only to find out on arrival that the game was postponed, I had to stay overnight as no evening trains back. I went back down the following week for the re-arranged game, 4 days off work in total, at least we won .
