Sunderland crowd

They do get an impressive support though.
Impressive how? Shytting in a fountain? Shagging a seagull? or the bait box champions for Newcastle?

Yeah.. I guess pretty impressive how they slag of their manager who has them nailed on for the playoffs. Walking out at half time for the new guy.

Maybe they are just ok the waiting list for Newcastle tickets?

Sunderland not being a big club isn't a recent thing. Since the late 1950s they have finished in the top ten of the top tier twice (7th both times). We have more top ten finishes in that time.

They are a 100% bonafide mid sized yo-yo club.

Bit Harsh
Sunderland are a better supported side than us. The last time Boro had 40,000 at our home game was 1963. Let thank sink in 1963 - Ironically against Sunderland.

Good job you don't win games of football based on attendance then 👍
Don’t you? The way we keep banging on about it, especially about our away support, I assumed you did, or at least that it got you lots of points.

Seriously, we do seem to spend most of our time taking the **** out of them for having exactly the same delusions we do, on exactly the same basis, only just a bit more.

We don't have the same delusions at all to be fair. Due to them winning titles in the late 1800s and early 1900s they believe they are still one of the big clubs in English football. They aren't. We don't for a second believe that - nor should we obviously.

Every clubs crow about their attendances when they are decent. Nothing to see here.

We have exactly the same delusion qualitatively, but less quantitively, as I said. Due to us being predominantly in the first division without winning anything during roughly the same period, 1890s to 1950s, when they were winning stuff, we think we should still be predominantly in the first division. No one on here will ever assess our “natural” potential based on what we did on our own merit between the Second World War, and when Gibson started throwing a shed load of cash at it. Funny that.

Nah disagree. The 2 clubs have been similar in performance for around 70 years and both sets of fans have very different opinion of where their clubs sits in the grand pecking order. Their delusion incorrectly comes from success in the early 1900s (Huddersfield and Preston also won titles back then).

Both clubs have fans who think they should be in a better place than they are. There's no doubt about this. All clubs are the same.

Erm nope

You seem to have the issue.
About the most blatant misquote I’ve ever seen. You missed the qualitatively, but not quantitively bit.

We are always banging on here about how we are “bigger” than Brighton (say) because we were in the first division more in the past. And sometimes also because we get more fans in an equivalent situation.

But we ignore the minor details that they have a bigger population, a bigger turnover, and are in a higher league. These factors obviously don’t count to “bigness”.

It’s not as extreme as the Sunderland delusion. But it’s exactly the same logic. We are not AS delusional as they are, but we are delusional in the same way.

Yeah that's fair. I honestly think Sunderland fans are worse than most for it. I think the Newcastle thing plays a big role in it. They are desperately trying to stay relevant with them.

To be accurate, no, they didn’t. Preston’s titles were in the 19th century and Huddersfield won theirs in the 1930s. But you are right that they dwell on past titles a bit my point is that we dwell on past seasons in the first division a bit. It’s kind of the same thing. Doesn’t mean **** in the 2020s.

Sunderland won titles in the 19th century and the 1930s. All a bit irrelevant as the point remains the same. I'm not so sure we dwell on first division seasons tbh. I genuinely think our fan base is more realistic than most and realise we are a yo-yo club. Real success is a run in the top division and maybe a cup run.

And if we are honest, there is an element of that in our rivalry too. Not because we are struggling to stay on a level with them, I agree with those who have said we have been more or less on a level with them for 70 years. But because we always struggle to cope with the fact that they care less about us than we do about them.

It’s logical that they should. They are our nearest rivals. We are not their nearest rivals. They have another rivalry, which is arguably the most bitter in English football. You can’t make them care the same way we do. You need no mystery beyond that to understand the difference. But for some reason it works us up no end.

And stop singing that dirge “oh Carrick says”
A load of words shot together because they rhyme.
It doesn’t make sense and sounds s**t.
Leeds get vilified for singing marching on together 20 times a match, yet the south stand do the same every game. at least their song makes sense
No footy songs make sense! Anyway 30k working class people paying an arm and a leg to stand in the cold and sing love songs to 11 millionairs who kick a ball around, the whole concept is ridiculous so why shouldn't the songs be?
