Dangerous Parking on School Run

A warning is being sounded to drivers putting lives at risk by parking dangerously and illegally near schools.

They face fines, penalty points and even driving bans for inconsiderate parking on ziz-zag and double yellow lines.

The alert from Middlesbrough Council’s Road Safety team comes as schools and parents gear up for the start of term.

They’re reminding drivers that stopping on zig-zag lines outside a school carries a fine of up to £100 fine while stopping on white zig-zags (near a marked crossing) can lead to the fine and up to three penalty points.

Failure to stop for a school crossing patrol officer attracts a fine of up to £1,000 fine and three penalty points.

Lollipop staff report feeling scared to step out onto the road due to drivers failing to stop, while inconsiderate and illegal parking near schools and crossing points reduces visibility and increases the risk of accidents.

Councillor Peter Gavigan, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Environment, said: “This kind of behaviour is selfish, completely unnecessary and has the potential to put lives at risk.

“The markings near schools are clear and unambiguous and they’re there for a reason – to keep people safe.
“There’s no excuse for parking on them, and we will be making sure those who do are prosecuted.”

This a problem all over and I'm glad to see Middlesbrough are tackling it.

It has come to the point where it is not worth trying to leave our estate 30 mins before and 15 minutes after Teesville Junior School finishes.

The problem schools in all areas have is that when there is a clampdown - one maybe two days - the problem is simply made better for these days.

As soon as the parking wardens etc go to the next school, back to normal. Cycle continues.

And it's usually the same parents doing the same sh*t day after day.

Name and shame. Or tyre nails. 👍

The fundamental problem has gone on for years. It's 20 years since I did a school run, I still get the shivers when I think back to the appalling antics I witnessed from many parents who insisted on driving less than half a mile to pick up their little cherubs. Parking on pavements, parking on crossings, even stopping in the road and nipping into the school foyer to collect junior...totally blocking the road.... I mean, how does your brain even let you do that?!

The school managed to get a PC to patrol at pick up and drop off times, to act as a deterrent for a period of time, which worked. Unfortunately once the PC was removed the same old problems started up again.

In the main, too many people just don't give a s h y t e.

Not just Boro, and not just parking. The aggressive and/or careless driving I encounter when I get mixed up in the school run in Darlo is scary. I'm OK I'm inside a two ton SUV get those kids out of my way losers...

And parents are scared to let their kids walk to school but the main danger they would face is the driving of... parents.

We had a clampdown at the school near us the week before Christmas, I bet it was back to normal today.

Don't you dare suggest things like tyre nails again on this website.

Fines up to, and points up to.

They should set fixed penalties. Minimum £1000 fine and min 3 points on your licence.

Word would soon get round.

Take your life in your own hands around Acklam Whin. They either drive up and down the pavements, blindly open doors as your walking past or worst of all try and run you down on the crossing near st clares

Lost count of the near misses

I live next door to a primary school and it is awful people think they have a right to park across your drive there was a little girl knocked down a little while back not seriously hurt thankfully the head teacher wrote to parents and there was enforcement officers around for coup of days then it just went back to how it was
I just hope it doesn’t take someone to be seriously hurt before people really take note

It is just another example of people's sense of entitlement around cars. Normally calm and law abiding people go strir crazy if they percieve their car driving to be attacked

Why can't kids who haven't got a disability walk to school or get the bus?
I do think more kids (or parents) are not prepared to do it these days. In the North Yorks village I grew up in, pretty much everyone walked to Primary school except for those who lived in the small villages further away. It must be less than half a mile from anywhere in the village to the school, yet I'm told these days there's a queue of traffic 25 cars long. Then again this was in the 80's, so most families didn't have a second car, or indeed one at all.

Happens up & down the country & I have to say & you can say this is sexist all you like I speak as I find its 99% women who have to park as close as they possibly can in their massive 4x4 to the school gates Its pure laziness.
They don't care if the park across drives on kerbs or even just dumping their car in the road blocking everything & everyone & god help you if you say anything to them the aggression & language that comes out of them is unbelievable.
Ive seen nearly full on fights outside my sons old primary school 1 of the people who live there needed to get out for work & of course this short a**e overweight blonde Essex girl in gym leggings parked her Range Rover over his drive while she not only took her little darling into the school but also was having a good old chin wag with her mates while he was waiting to get his car out.
She absolutely flew at him for having the audacity to ask her to move & politely requested she doesn't park over his drive again in future.
She tried for a couple of days after that to make a point of parking over his drive again until 1 day a parking enforcement officer who was waiting round the back of his house came out & put a parking ticket on it while she went into the school she though someone was winding her up at first until she saw him walking away she even tried to have a go at him think she got into a bit of trouble because he filmed the whole thing.
Everyone was just laughing at her she didn't do it again.
The school even asked the guys from the local fire brigade to come round and ask people who were parked if the school was on fire did they think they would be able to get the fire engine down there they mostly got told to F off.
Its madness & it is as already said a sense of entitlement I just think its plain old selfish laziness.
