Brief piece, but interesting.

Extract:

".....Warnock says he’s been impressed with Percovich’s contributions and says the Uruguayan can still play a big part.

When asked if Percovich will still have a role in Boro’s coaching set-up, Warnock replied: “Yeah very much so, I think Ronnie and Blacky have got on really well with him.
“He’s the best we’ve ever known at putting substitutes on and telling everybody where they’re going and what they’re doing and who they’re marking.
“He’s pretty amazing at that, it might be a new job for somebody that – the substitute coach.”

Warnock was also asked if Woodgate will still have a role at the club but says that decision lies with chairman Steve Gibson.
“I’ve no idea if I’m honest,” said Warnock when quizzed on Woodgate’s position. “I think Steve said he would be talking to Jonathan so I’ve not really any idea on that.”

Thanks for posting this as I'd not seen it before.

I'm sure it wasn't his intention but is there just me that thinks that Warnock's quotes about Leo come across as slightly patronising "specialist substitute coach"?!

I must admit given the body language on the bench in the end of season games I thought Leo might be on his way this summer, but this would suggest not.

Woody will just get in the way.
Having the previously failed Manager on your patch is a hinderance and potential source of discord in the camp.
Time to move on not hang on.

It's a shame but sadly I couldn't agree more.
Jonathan Woodgate would benefit immensely from working with Neil Warnock.
But some players will have a natural loyalty to the old manager.
It does them credit but I don't think it will help if and when we have a run of defeats.

Well I think it’s less patronising than telling him to pack his bags and head to the airport, like he probably expected.

I can’t believe for one minute Woody would be given anything more than a scouting role or youth team manager or something.

Mind you, I never thought for one second Gibson would appoint him in the first place so you never know!

I did say on my awful ‘ITK’ post the other week that Warnock wanted to speak to his wife before making his mind up about coming and then the next day it was reported that’s what he was doing and I also mentioned Leo wouldn’t be going anywhere. Not groundbreaking stuff but at least I wasn’t fed bull****. Apparently Gibson absolutely loves Leo so I’d imagine this is very much Gibsons say

It did sound a bit patronising but as you suggest I don't think that was the intent.

I feel it comes across that way in reading it. Perhaps in a different tone/ presented differently it would come across differently. I'm not sure many managers would purposely patronise any of the staff they are likely to be working with.

Woodgates departure I suspect is a matter of finance and timing now. Quiet exit following a new signing or something similar.

Woodgate needs to be away for his own future, he can be a decent manager though he needs space & time to learn... if I was him I'd be asking to go with an eye for proving myself elsewhere & maybe coming back the real deal & leading the club forward or even bigger clubs*

*other clubs may have larger fan base, more trophy history & richer owners.... however Boro is always #1.. just to clarify..

It does come across as being very patronising doesn't it.

If, as suggested, "this is very much Gibsons say" then it was probably meant to to be patronising as well. No manager wants his chairman choosing his coaching staff or players especially a vastly experienced one like Warnock.

Substitute coach :D:D:D

As laughable as "substitute coach" sounds, there's plenty of other sports that have very specialist coaches focusing on the micro elements of how a game plays out.

Look at baseball for example where they have a coach on each base advising the runner on a very small part of the game, or NFL where there's a myriad of coaches for both attack and defense - why not in football ?

Just from experience.
Any "loyalty to the old manager" is a potentially divisive and if you are building a "team" in any walk of life, you cant afford to carry someone else`s baggage if you want to be successful.
What woodgate does is up to him, but there are ample opportunities in non-league clubs across the North East. He could volunteer to coach at any number of clubs and fine tune his skills, where money and plush facilities are just a dream.

Many good managers have started at the bottom and learned how to manage men, before they move on. No harm in that. Woodgate has lead a charmed life, so muck an nettles wouldnt harm him.

Jesus we owe Woody nothing . What’s this fixation with not hurting anybody’s feelings . It’s a dog eat dog profession .
Woody needs to walk away and reflect on his tenure , learn from it and start again with a lower profile position elsewhere .You can’t make a silk purse out of a sows ear . If you haven’t got it YOU HAVENT GOT IT

I've often considered this when watching documentaries on the NFL.

In any large non sport organisation, the leader would be able to recruit good people and delegate small scale management tasks to enable them to get the best out of the incredibly expensive playing staff.
