Andy Preston: Face Masks To Be Compulsory In Shops

Face masks are not to stop you catching it, they are to reduce the chances of you spreading it. They are surely a good idea if it brings gs down the rate of spreading the virus.

Anything works in this way, even your old Boro scarves, everybody should dig out their Charlton's Champions one as a mark of respect after today's sad news.
I understand their purpose Junos, I would argue with how effective they are, the evidence suggests not very. On top of how ineffective they are someone has to dispose of them, usually a street cleaner on minimum wage and no training on biological waste disposal.

This is another example of a poorly thought out strategy. Who is going to supply face masks for those who can ill afford them? Who is expected to remove, what is essentially biological waste?

Face masks become petri dishes for the virus and there is very little evidence to suggest they reduce infection rates.
Yes it seems odd that there are no yellow hazardous waste bins everywhere.

There are so many anomalies/conundrums/unknowns relating to dealing with Covid19. Some very insightful points there Laughing.

Randy, I am not sure what countries in Asia who use face masks a lot do about waste. If that is the way we are going, and I have no problem with face masks, then we have to put an infrastructure in place to supply and dispose of them. Without the infrastructure in place discarded masks will make the spread of the infection increase versus not using them.

In addition the load of the virus you get seems to impact how serious the infection is, mass from infected people will be heavily loaded with the virus.

I agree with facemasks being worn but for practicality it would be awkward trying to eat and drink while wearing a mask.

It's not just the covid-19 causing virus that could be an issue though. Common flu could live on them for example, that can still kill folk.

If it's mandatory in shops then fine. At least people have a choice then. Making it mandatory in any outdoor space won't work and should not work as those unfortunate enough to already have issues breathing will never be allowed out of their homes which is wrong.

10 disposable face masks for £8 in Sainsburys on Acklam Rd - if you're on the breadline you're not going to pay that.

Does Andy Preston (or any Mayor) actually have the authority to say that face masks are compulsory?
The wife made ours and for loads of family, friends and neighbours._IMG_000000_000000.jpg

Once the face mask is on (and it should be one with a snug fit) then you shouldn't touch it again until you take it off because once you do that you're transferring the bugs in the mask to your fingers. You see people in supermarkets diligently wearing face masks that are gaping at the top and hanging open round the sides, messing with them and adjusting them. The marginal improvement they provide (if any) is more than compensated by the false sense of security and the extra hand transmission that results. And of course they should be disposed of after single use. It's why nobody uses cotton hankies any more. They''re Mingin.

Outside tube stations in London beginning to see these masks strewn around on the ground and I fear some poor b***r having to sweep these up outside shops. If they are going to start fining people for not wearing a mask I hope those who get caught chucking them away way to lay equally dealt with.

It’s nothing new that’s why people (who we all thought odd) in the far east have been wearing masks in winter for years. Just a shame when they take them off they’ll eat anything that moves!
