Chesterfield deleted their tweet this morning..

Weird one for me. My dad had some involvement with team GB when he was younger and is very proud of it, as am I by connection as we're very close. So the Olympics was a big deal in my house as a kid and I'd see him get as excited at his particular sport as much as he would seeing the boro in on goal or winning a big game.

My Royal Enfield bizarrely has a small union jack on one side with the word England above it. Which is borderline amusing but I don't really like it. Not sure what to replace it with though and I adore the bike.

I personally dislike the flag, I'm not overly fond of the England-centric nature of the union and I'm not especially proud of some things perpetrated in our history which that flag represents to so many and how it's now become a symbol of nationalism rather than patriotism. The former being a particularly ugly ideology.
Which sport did your father get involved with?

Because it doesn’t say Great Britain or United Kingdom above it. It says ‘England’ despite it not being the English flag. Which, as mentioned is one of my issues with the flag itself.
So maybe controversial rather than bizarre. Bizarre would be something like the Italian flag with the word 'England' above it.
It could be that they used the Union Flag as it is instantly recognisable as UK, even without colours. Then the word England clarifies exactly which part of the UK.

Well I find it bizarre that someone would take the union flag and place the word England above it. Thanks for your interest and opinion on the matter though.

But I am of an era where the union flag was never the predominate flag at England games. Its always been St George's in my lifetime, thus could be why. I only have few memories of seeing union jacks at England games.

It'd be bizarre to me if it said Scotland or Wales above it either.

I think there is a difference between flying a flag at an England football game and using one to represent commercial heritage. England is part of UK and represented by either flag, but the Union Flag is probably more recognisable as a 'brand' logo.

To me it is not too dissimilar to receiving a letter from abroad addressed to Middlesbrough, England, UK.
There is no need to put England and UK, either one would do. But putting both isn't really confusing or bizarre.

How would you feel if they put the England flag above the Union flag? Same thing really. England, UK.
