I didn't realise we're the 9th oldest 'professional' club in the country....

  1. 1863 Stoke City
  2. 1865 Nottingham Forest
  3. 1867 Sheffield Wednesday
  4. 1871 Reading
  5. 1874 Aston Villa
  6. 1874 Bolton Wanderers
  7. 1875 Birmingham City
  8. 1875 Blackburn Rovers
  9. 1876 Middlesbrough
  10. 1876 Macclesfield Town
Interestingly a part from Macclesfield - all those clubs are similar sizes these days

Clubs like Sheffield FC - which is technically the oldest club in the world, apparently don't count as they're not a 'professional' club - they're regarded as an independent club

I thought we were liquidated and started again in 1986?

is that list right? Bolton 1874 and Preston 1875 (I think) where always amongst the oldest...and I always thought Notts County where the oldest at 1862.

Given the Football league started up in the 1880's with 12 professional clubs and we won the FA amateur cup twice in the 1890's it is unlikely that we were the ninth professional club to be founded.

The list is of the oldest clubs currently in the Football League/Premier League.

But as far as I can see there's only Notts County and Wrexham that were formerly league clubs, still exist and are older than us but not on the list.
