    The Battle of Britain.

Eric Lock was probably the BoB's highest ace.

    Air Con @ Home

5 for £7? A real bargain. I'd push the boat out and do the whole house for £10.

Air India Flight to Gatwick crash - unconfirmed 242 on board

This is entirely, utterly and completely speculation. We shouldn't speculate about what happened, but if we are going to speculate then it would appear - overwhelmingly - that the captain turned off the fuel switches.

A66 to be duelled from Scotch Corner to M6.

If you could rely on the traffic moving at 55mph there wouldn't be an issue. It's when it slows to 20mph that the problems start. If I'm driving to or from Edinburgh to the North East I use the A697 which is a shorter route than the A1 because it cuts the East Lothian corner off and it's more...

A66 to be duelled from Scotch Corner to M6.

70mph on the A1 in Nothumberland? On the two lane stretches it's usually 20mph or 30mph, or however fast combine harvesters and tractors can go.

A66 to be duelled from Scotch Corner to M6.

In the summer the A1 grinds to a halt at Shilbottle, again at the turn off for Bamburgh, and again at Haggerston. All those right turns on and off the A1 are very dangerous. The A1 is the main trunk road in Britain, connecting the capitals of England and Scotland. It should be motorway never...

    Raducanu

Sabalenka won in straight sets, and made a lot of unforced errors. It was a good performance by Raducanu, and very encouraging after a few disappointing years, but she still lost in two sets and there's a chasm she still has to bridge.

    ENG v IND 2nd test

In 1939. England have scored more than 390 in a fourth innings three times in 150 years. None of those was to win. The highest ever England score in the 4th inning to win a test is 378.

    ENG v IND 2nd test

Why India waited so long to declare is a mystery. It's given England a chance of a draw if it rains tomorrow.

    ENG v IND 2nd test

In 150 years of Test cricket, there have only been four occasions when a team has chased more than 400 to win a Test in the 4th innings. If India pile on too many runs, there won't be any incentive for England to chase it. 450 is enough, and not too many.

Rachel Reeves in tears in the House

No, not at all. Johnson and co were charlatans. You can be self assured without being a liar, can have confidence without being crooked. But as someone said above, if your job is very stressful - and politics is about as stressful as jobs can get - and it's causing the level of anguish we saw...

Rachel Reeves in tears in the House

It's not archaic thinking to expect poiticians to be confident and self assured. Politics is a tough, rough business and if people don't have the self assurance to shake off setbacks and criticism, then they're better off doing something else.

    Help needed techy people

Somebody will always recommend a Chromebook. They are ok for most general work but they aren't really future proof. The processors seem a bit slow to me. Better to get a Windows laptop. Choose one with at least 16Gb of Ram to allow it to work well as Windows 11 bloats up in the future. Asus...

    Accommodation in Glasgow

Saltmarket is a nice little area. Very gentrified these days. It's very convenient for Glasgow Green. If you walk down to the south end of Saltmarket, the walk along Clyde St beside the river to St Enoch Sq is very nice. Subway to Ibrox from there. If you walk north along Saltmarket it turns...

    Accommodation in Glasgow

If you just want somewhere clean and handy and cheap the various universities in Glasgow offer summer rates on stays from one night and up. Glasgow University and Strathclyde University both have places convenient for the middle of the city, or the west end. From either you can get the subway to...
