The weekend beer and music thread!

Having a few Moretti watching the sun start to head behind the Pennines from my little patch of North Yorks. Mrs is away with her mates so it’s me and the dogs, I’m weirdly only just getting into The Rolling Stones. I’d never really bothered with them in 40 odd years….so in a strange twist l...

Who's your money on for the Grand National?

Eldorado Allen. It’s a free bet and that’s all they’re getting out of me.

£100k a year doesn’t go far you know

My Mrs worked in London earlier in her career. She sacked it off for less pay up north. Financially she’s way better off up here, and has an arguably better lifestyle. Although she did meet me, so it’s not all good news for her! She earned about 50% more salary down south, but paid a premium...

    Happy St Patricks Day

Had a Guinness Zero yesterday without even realising it was St Patrick’s day. Possibly some supernatural forces at work there, definitely not just down to the fact there was some in the fridge and not a lot else.

    Early Retirement.

It’s the workplace pension scheme, I’m not sure when it came in exactly and I know the minimum requirements have changed over the years. I said it was required by law, but that maybe isn’t quite accurate, as an individual could opt out of it.

Obviously there’s a separate issue in the country where we have an income level where it’s not possible for someone to cover their basic living costs. Let alone a pension. That’s not right and needs fixing. However 500k is reasonably achievable without having a massive salary or generous...

    Gambling Addiction

I’ve recently moved from paid Spotify to the free version with ads. Monday to Friday I get adverts for herbal tea and highways agency advice on preventing hedgehog deaths caused by litter. From about 7am Saturday and Sunday. I get near constant ads and offers from the friendly Irish sounding...

    Anyine had a Ants nest.

My front garden is riddled with them from about May to Sep. They’re invincible. Tried every type of the products you can get, takes out a few of the cannon fodder at first, but they soon regroup.

    The great air fryer con

Air friers are so dated. If you're not cooking everything by sous vide, then you’re not cooking anything.

    Early Retirement.

it is very difficult, but the issue is that the rent, heating and food requirements aren't going to disappear when you cease working. in the case of people on low or minimum income I think there should be some more help to bolster state pension. I'm not enough of an economist to know where that...

    Early Retirement.

Without knowing your figures, or wanting to, I suspect you’ve got a decent pot based on those contributions and the length of time you appear to have been there. Can you cut back on what you think you might beed in retirement?

    Early Retirement.

True, but over a long period unlikely. Even less likely if you’ve got an employer contributing. I know you’re probably being a little tongue in cheek with it, but what you’ve said does reflect the attitude that some people have around pensions. There’s a small risk of losing therefore do...

    Early Retirement.

If you can do it, starting early will give you a massive boost and you’ll basically get more out for less in. I appreciate that’s a big if for younger people these days. I’ve nicked this example from unbiased.co.uk. I’ve not scrutinized the working and the pot amounts aren’t going to amount to...
