Paddy McNair

I think a lot of people were being a bit unfair to McNair. The whole defence looked lost at sea under Wilder. Carrick went to 4 at the back and suddenly Fry and Lenihen looked like different players.

There was every chance the same would apply to McNair, but because of the form of the other 2 he didn't really have a chance until now under Carrick.

Pleased for him.

I was one of them. Hands up. Buzzing for Paddy today, thought he was terrific

Fair play to Carrick also, for sticking with last week's winning team, would have been easy for him to stick Fry back in.
For me Paddy keeps his place in the team, it's his shirt to lose.
Yep. It's what I wanted to happen. Thought there was a decent chance, but expected him to go with Fry.

I think it just sends a great message to the whole squad. You might have to be patient. But work hard and be ready because if you get a chance and take it, I'll keep you in.

Keeps everyone on their toes and keeps the squad players interested.

I've never really understood why he's been wrote off in recent weeks. He's been one of our best players over the last 2 years.

It's almost like people hammer him because he can play anywhere. The type you'd want in any squad.

I think I'm right in saying his last 3 starts have been a clean sheet? That said credit to Carrick. He didn't just bring Fry back who's also been superb.

You'd think it's Mcnairs to lose now?

Horses for courses maybe, if we are up against an old fashioned cart horse aerial threat forward, Fry may be a better option.

If we want to draw teams on to us and play out from the back, with the centre backs integral to building up attacks carrying the ball out from the back, then Paddy would be a better option.

Like others I thought Fry would come straight back in, even though McNair had done nothing wrong. However, picking McNair sends a great message to the rest of the squad, it's not just about favoured names, play well and you'll keep the shirt.

That'll keep everyone on their toes, those in the team know their places aren't guaranteed to be safe and those out of the team have genuine hope they can get in. Healthy competition helps keep standards high.

Our Emerald Isle centre back duo look the business, tough on Dael, but he will get his chance again soon enough

After last week’s game I thought there’s no way we can let him go— at least until the end of the season. I understand that there was some figures thrown around that we might let him go for £2m, but clearly he’s worth much more than that.

He’s done well since coming back like, consistently has always been his issue, so if he can keep this up then fair play to him. 3 clean sheets in his last 3 league starts.

He's a good player to have in the squad because he can cover several positions but he's not the best in any of those positions which is why he shouldn't be a starter.

The only reason we would be looking at moving him out is because he's a high earner and it doesn't make much sense to have a high earner that isn't considered 1st choice.

I would expect (and hope) that against a better attacking team we would go with our better defenders which would mean he drops back to the bench. I like the idea of "your shirt to lose" in principle but I also think it leads to questions about individuals being blamed for every mistake and you also end up with accusations of manager's favourites etc which fans use as a stick to beat the manager when they disagree with them. I think picking the best team you can is the better option even if it means dropping someone who has been playing well. Ideally everyone will be playing well which is good because it means you know you can rely on them if you need them.

Anyone think he could have made more effort to stop their player getting the cross over when they hit the bar?
I do actually. I watch him closely as I’m not as big a fan as some. I think he does lack that real aggression to his defending, if he had that he would be top

Everyone's talking about Chuba's goals, but Paddy's goal was unstoppable.
😀
Great unstoppable goal by Paddy as you say NB, thoroughly deserved, but Chuba's first goal was absolutely amazing. He hit the ball from the left side of play, across the goal and keeper into the far left, which their keeper had well covered but for a tiny space probably the size of a carrier bag to his left, which Chuba exploited. Magnificent goal and one he'll remember for a while I'm sure.
