Why wasn’t Watmore offered a new contract

He’s a 60 minute player, isn’t going to improve at 28 and is probably slightly lower quality than where we aim to be

He’s been great for us, but if we’re honest his glass ceiling is midtable championship. He’s also never going to grow in value, his injuries and age and inconsistencies mean he’ll never be able to be sold for any serious money. Better to replace in the summer with a talented young player in that position

We don’t know if he wasn’t offered one but turned it down?
it looked like he wasn’t integral to carricks plans, he was a Useful squad player but is good enough to be more than that in a team that hasn’t got the quality we seem to be building..
I was a bit disappointed but we and he will move on… hopefully he never plays against us…
Munce too, just released by mutual consent, hope he finds his level…

Maybe we wanted to wait until we knew what division we would be playing in before offering a contract to someone who isn’t an regular starter, and Watmore didn’t want that uncertainty given the injury problems he’s had?

Of course that is all well and good, but the reality is that since Patrick Bamford the first time in 2013-14 Watmore has been our best and most consistent forward. The vast majority of others have been absolutely ***** or had no longevity. If Watmore wanted to go then fair enough, but if it is a club decision then it is a ridiculous decision.

Watmore will have wanted the security of a longer deal to look after his family for life, which as said given his injury and covid causing uncertainty is understandable. More than this, he's the kind of guy who'd go mad just tossing it off on the bench (are you listening Rudy?) he's an all or nothing player who just wants to play and give it his all. There's no way we'd have been able to promise that playing time in all honesty, he'd have known that, plus I can't see Carrick being the kind of bloke to lie to his face.

It's very sad to see him go, but what he needed after the service he's given to the Boro had to be given importance, it's just plain respectful.

Well Akpom and Coburn look up to it and I’m sure the club will invest again in the summer. If we keep the same quality of players we will largely get the same results 7-15th in the championship

Because if the ultimate aim is to progress into a side capable of promotion, a 28 year old with injury troubles just probably isn’t worth the punt, however well he’s done for us.

As much as I appreciate Duncan given everything he’s been through and how he leaves it all out on the pitch. There were a lot of times I watched him and thought he wasn’t good enough.

Evidently Carrick agrees.

Exactly.
And good as he was in the role he played in this division, there is no way he would be playing in the Premiership.

The lad wants to play more regularly, his body can’t handle playing every game and we are trying to keep a settled team, he’s also inconsistent, always puts a shift in and gives his all but he’s not a player to build the team around. I’m sure we’d of kept him around as a squad player but I expect this is his decision and the club has respected that.

For me Carrick wants to improve the squad. He can't simply sign players without others being shipped out, he's already said it's a big squad.

We'll see more of those not playing regularly shipped out and first team players dropped to the bench if we're successful.

He can't have cost much over the time he's been a Boro player. Are we saying his demands were jaw-dropping? As for being a '60 minute player', does that mean we've conned Millwall?
He could have some valuable cameos to offer before the end of the season.
As it is, we're back to having unproven loaners making up the squad.

He was rumoured to be leaving under Wilder too, so I suspect its an issue around fitness, rather than his ability, which would explain why he wasn't offered a new contract too.
