Job problems - anxiety - any advice please

If you are financially stable to enough to get out of there ASAP, then do it and good luck. You didn't deserve to work for such a bad company and I hope you find something better.

If it's a big enough company, then as many have said, go through appropriate channels to raise concerns, but if they're acting like this I'm guessing it may be a small company with a clique at the top, wary of new ideas and not always willing to play by established rules and conventions...

Not wrong bud. They are a big company in terms of revenue but a small part of a bigger group. They acquired this company only 3 years ago. And many of the processes and policies and the way they do things is very reactive and constantly plugging gaps

Hi Marty if the company are aware of this and they have been for a 12 month period the company should treat it as a disability and as such regardless of the fact that you do not have two years service you are free to take them to tribunal under disability discrimination. These companies are awful I really feel for you if there is anything I can help with anything please let me know. If you be are not a member of a union you should definitely join one.

Thanks. It would get messy wouldn’t it with courts. I’m entitled to 4 weeks notice as iv passed probation. Thanks for your help
I think he also means you need 2 years service in order to claim unfair or constructive dismissal. Unless it's on grounds of discrimination.

Might be worth speaking to citizens advice before a lawyer (on the grounds they're free and lawyers are not!).

Wow. I didn’t know this, I started 6 months ago mate and declared my mental health on my medical forms upon staring. I have this on record on email when it was sent. Thank you for your advice, I thought after I got a little rise things were good and I felt happy. But within 2 weeks they are telling me I’m rubbish basically. Thankfully I’m passed probation stage which gives me more rights and protection

Thanks so much Baron. Really appreciate you taking time to offer advice. Yes I realised they are trying to move me out. I’ll ensure I document every single thing. Would I have to wait until I did the 4 week performance plan and potentially get let go before I took it down the legal route? Would I have any grounds to do it now based on the fact I’m off with depression which they have exasperated and haven’t shown me a duty of care? Thanks again 🙏
I'll add to this, if possible on your HR profile, export copies of your performance reviews so you have a record of what was signed off and agreed to. If they then try and claim poor performance, they will have to provide evidence to counter yours.

As another poster said, extend the sick to 4 weeks, then come back (if you wish, depending on your health) and work to the performance plan. In order to file for unfair dismissal, its harder if you resign. If you show good faith and have done everything the business suggested you do, it looks better for you if it does go to court because you acted to meet the company targets.

Can’t offer anything more than had already been said but good luck Marty and take care of yourself over anything else.

This really does highlight what a great place this board can be sometimes with a vast range of knowledge and experiences. Well done to all that have offered advice and have got Marty’s back 👏🏼

Can’t echo that enough. I’m really overwhelmed at how much support iv received. Wasn’t out of bed until I started getting replies and amazing advice. I’m now dressed and feel a little more like me. Please if I can help anyone with anything I’m here for you. Thank you all so so much.

Like everyone else I’m just doing my best I can be in life. Want to provide for my son and just try to enjoy my life. I feel a sense of relief today and I don’t feel like I’m alone anymore. To know people care, have experienced similar situations and genuinely want to help is unbelievable

I can't really offer any more advice than you've already been given by folk in this thread, but I've worked with some companies who are absolutely terrible when it comes to mental health. I've overheard manager's making fun of people who are struggling and accusing them of using it as an excuse, actively seeking to get rid of them because of it. Awful.

Best of luck with it though Marty, you did the right thing by looking for advice on here.

Thank you buddy. I have been on medications for a few years. And the constant fear of something bad happening gets hold of me a lot and I find it really hard to manage, with low confidence it is exhausting. Iv given the job everything to the point it has affected my family and the people I love. And then to walk in that on Monday sent me spiralling.

Hi everyone. Just wanting to post as I’m having a few problems at the minute. I started a new head of marketing job back in September last year. I passed probation in December and things were great. I came back in January and only 2 weeks ago was given a 5% pay rise. My manager the MD telling me he’s really pleased and well done. I then get called into a meeting on Monday morning after 2 days holiday to take my girlfriend away to York. He tells me I’m not performing, he’s been told by other managers I’m not doing my job and decides to put me on a 4 week performance plan. Basically trying to move mr out of the business. The things he raised have never been raised in my last review when I passed probation, no evidence and nothing recorded. He set me 6 tasks to complete by end of Feb, 2 of which I have no control over and it’s clear he wants me out. How can I go from a pay rise to that within 2 weeks. I have a long history of anxiety and depression and have been in some dark places over the past few years. I declared this when I started the job on my medical forms. No one in HR or senior management ever acknowledged my records. Never approached me to see if I might need help or additional support. Iv got progressively worse with my anxiety with the job and the way they have put so much pressure on me. Long days and nights working which has affected my relationships with family and friends. Haven’t been sleeping for weeks and just gone into my shell. I phoned my doctor first thing on Tuesday and broke down, he’s signed me off for 2 weeks and iv sent my signed doctors note to HR. I have had messages From my boss since asking if I want to rearrange meetings etc. just no support or care for my welfare.

I don’t want to go back. I have had to deal with a lot of politics in the job and it’s making ill. I’m off now until 13 Feb but I’m just not sure which way I go about this. They haven’t acknowledged my medical history which I thought long and hard about declaring before I started. Any help or advice would really mean a lot to me. Sorry for such a long post. Thank you
First priority has to be your health and mental well-being. For you to pass your evaluation and get a pay rise suggests that you are not only competent but we’re exceeding expectations. ‘Long days and nights’ suggest that you were being overworked.. bosses love that! Doesn’t seem like a coincidence that this performance plan came in after your two days holiday.

Happy when your killing your self got them and then it’s the end of the world when you take a holiday.. yeah nice one!

These six tasks that you have no control over sound a bit like a test albeit an unnecessary one.

Look after yourself no matter what at all costs.. your bosses would do the same for themselves and at your expense.

The obvious would be to look for another job.. but maybe there is a way it can work out ok with the current place? Difficult for an MD/manager to understand what your needs and requirements are.. if there is some way you can get that across.. that might be helpful.

Sorry to hear your predicament mate. I think there are a few people on here that suffer with anxiety including myself. Work related stress and anxiety is truly awful and when companies play these sort of games it can have a major impact on one's life. As many have already said: Document everything, Question everything, stay cool and tell yourself things can only get better.

Normally there is a process which would involve warnings or conversations about performance before going to an improvement plan.

First I would check with HR if the correct process has been followed.

Look after your health of course.

After that you could look for a payout but you have only been there a few months so maybe just resign once you have something else in place and put it down to experience.

If they have a functioning hr department the case would fall down at the first hurdle.

When they put you on a performance plan, did they ask you what support you needed and did they refuse any support. Did they say what they are going to do during the 4 week plan?

Also if it doesn’t affect your health, I would ask directly why they passed your probation and then raised the performance plan quickly. I would then ask them to document it within your records
