I know the Penderel’s Oak on High Holborn in London. Before the pandemic it was packed nearly every night. Went past it just before Xmas and it was a vast cavernous empty sad place.

I know there is some total knobs on here who get on their high horses at the merest mention of Wetherspoons but they have their place in society. Some cannot afford to pay £6:00 for a pint of IPA that pretends to be a beer. Also think about the people about to lose their jobs.
Completely agree at least they are not ripping people off with overpriced poor quality beer and lager 👍

I wouldn't go in a weatherspoons but each to their own.

I popped in Lloyds early December. I was on a Christmas Day / Night with work and me and another lad were the last 2 standing so thought would have a few before heading home so popped it was close by.

Couldn’t believe how dead it was for a Saturday night! When I think back to how busy it used to be, couldn’t believe it. Not surprised it’s closing. A lot of those types of venues rely on busy weekend trade. It’s a big old venue too which I imagine will have big running costs.

Lots of venues from my Teens / Early 20’s are pretty much gone now. Arena, Crown, Walkabout, Cornerhouse. Lloyds now the next one to go!

I must be getting old!!!!

I don't begrudge people drinking and eating in there either. Yes the food is pish but you get what you pay for and some can only afford that. Also the company does well to buy up old buildings and renovate them and make them nice places to be.

You forgot to mention it's sad news for the hundreds of employees covering those 39 businesses and also the jobs affected in the supply chain to those businesses.

The hospitality industry is crying out for people so I hope they will be ok.\
For Martin - it’s like me losing a fiver

Tell me about it, we've been looking for a chef since November but the good and great ones are comfortable in their current roles. Business is still great for us though, even this month has been busier than usual, even this last weekend before this week's payday we got slammed all weekend.

Most towns/cities have more than one Wetherspoons so hopefully where they do, staff will be redeployed and not made redundant.
