E-Scooter Rental to be made Legal in UK on Saturday

they may be on Teesside roads this weekend - pubs reopen - though I expect more will be on cycle & footpaths than our pot hole infested roads..
good idea & as usual without first putting infrastructure in place to make them safe - all should have an 'engine' noise fitted too, so the public can be aware of them.

P
It's not, but crack on.

I just don't understand why people spend so much energy resisting new forms of transport instead of trying to embrace them

Sorry didnt mean to appear facetious using a Dave Allen joke. I meant to illustrate that I do t agree with your argument that just because there have been less fatalities in Europe with escooters than cars doesnt mean we should allow them anymore than we didn't allow Segways on public roads . I dont think we have the infrastructure at the moment personally and the responses in this thread show there are concerns.

I have just read this and never really considered it before.

The UK's blindness charity says e-scooters remain a "real and genuine threat" ahead of their legalisation.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) said that the government's safeguards, announced this week, had failed to assuage its fears.

Other witnesses at a parliamentary transport committee hearing said the top speed and weight of the e-scooters were higher than they should be.

It will become legal to ride e-scooters on Great Britain's roads from Saturday.

The thing is - the other countries have blind people too and it appears to work.
And, If I was blind, I wouldn’t go one one :)

:ROFLMAO:

I was nearly run over by one near Lac d'Aureilhan. A woman swerved round me on her e-scooter, a woman behind me had to drag her kids out of the way and the woman on the scooter went through a bush and into the lake. She came out covered in black slimy mud and the scooter some time later, :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I just smiled at the other woman and we carried on with our peaceful stroll thinking 'karma.' :)

Thinking slightly more about this. Is a scooter any faster, or heavier, than a pushbike? They aren't exactly the nosiest of things either. It does sound like a reaction to something new, when something established poses exactly the same risks.

The speed of the e-scooter is limited to 15 mph. Their weight is c.20kg.
Take a bog standard Nissan Leaf, top speed 96mph & c.1,600kg.

I'd love it if all motor vehicles were limited to 15mph in urban environments.

Would you? 20mph which is the norm in London is FAR too slow.

It is about 1-2x the weight of a bike & goes a couple mph faster than my gran when she is going to the shops.

Only if you consider wearing helmets & hi-vis necessary for walking about in cities as well.
Cycle proficiency? How old are you?

To be able to hire the scooter people will require a driving licence.

Speaking of Cycling Proficiency - I earned my CP badge circa 1966 - anyway , there were, and they still apply, certain hand signals particular to cyclists - I saw today, for the first time I can recall, a cyclist do the hand signal for proceeding straight on at a crossroad with managed traffic lights! :)

A 3 year old got killed in Edinburgh yesterday, when a driver lost control of their car & mounted the pavement.
It'd be a lot harder to do at 15mph.
Nobody would get anywhere. I live in a city were must street are 20 and that itself is far too slow.

Sorry, not read whole thread...

I heard on jezza vibes show that there is only one rental company for legal ones? Any links to govt members family or friends?

But you said about e-scooters which are speed limited to 15 mph...

Haha, you could weave in and out of traffic like a loon!
It depends which one you get with range. I've seen ones with 40 mile range. Now that would be SOME journey on an e scooter. I think even the most basic ones get 10 miles, which should be enough. I bet they don't take much time to recharge. They look fun!

So just some I'm clear on this:
15mph in a car in urban areas = no one gets anywhere
15mph on an e-scooter = weaving in & out of *slower* traffic and journeys of 10 miles

Is that right?

No, no that's not right at all.

You may find this is more common when they're swerving to miss scooter riders.

I felt uneasy with e-scooters on the pavements when I came across them, like bicycles, they should be dismounted when not on the road.

When did you last see a cyclist dismount for the footpath?
