Caffeine hit for Cyclists and Runners

Point for both cyclists and runners.

You managed to carry the full tube/packet/bottle with you, take the fugging rubbish home with you, you are not on the Tour De France, you are not running in the Olympics. Drives me nuts following cyclists (in particular) and watching them chuck empty packets and bottles into the hedgerow like they see on the TdF. Chunts*.

Thank you.

*Obviously only applies to those who litter, other cyclists and runners are lovely people.
And those in cars who empty their crap out the windows and chuck plastic bottles and KFC boxes out as they ride along:cool:(y)

Not surprisingly (I hope) I’m one of the lovely ones.
Littering by anyone is just psis poor but, sadly, all too common

This looks interesting, thanks. I'm set to do a 160k ride tomorrow and will take about a dozen SIS gels. Plus a couple of bananas and a marmalade sandwich or two. That should see me through. The reward will be a bottle of Russian Imperial stout when I get home!

Always used one or two gels on a long ride.
Chatting to a friend who is on the racing circuit in London who told me about energy gum that a lot of them are using.

Just tried it on a 60k ride today. The ride ends in a horrible cobbled climb maxing out at 30 degrees. Took some gum 2 km away and ended up beating my PB quite easily.
Tastes nice (unlike gels) and easy to get access to whilst riding

Going to order some to France, how many would you use on a ride? Am I right it’s ten pieces to a pack? Says 4 packs for £8.
I like the Gu gels but just like the drinks I find they become a bit sickly sweet after a while which is why I usually fill my second bottle with plain water.

Agree Mut. I cycle lots and I'm disappointed at the number of discarded gel packets at the side of the road. I think it's ok to use them but please cyclists just put the empty ones in your back pocket.

Where are you riding with a 30% cobbled climb? That's pretty much Halifax style.

I’ve never understood caffeine ones, yes they give you energy but don’t they increase your heart rate?

Can’t get away with gels at all.

I can eat cereal half an hour before I run that would do me for up to 2 hours running

I have a 320km ride planned at the weekend ... I only really use gels when racing, especially caffeine gels as anything with caffeine in affects my sleep unless taken early in the day, but on this occasion I will use every trick in the book to get me round and if i don't sleep after approx 7000 calories, I will get a bottle of Lagavulin down me:sleep:

So where can acquire this caffeine gum for delivery tomorrow please?;)

Taking 12 energy gels during one ride cant do your constitution any good, certainly wouldn't mine anyway. I try and avoid them like the plague. Prefer the odd banana and graze protein boxes for snacks on a long one. I am booked with ah group to do London to Parius in September ( 4 days) - its not been cancelled yet and hoping it goes ahead.

Yeah me neither, be s***ing through the eye of a needle. 12 gels in 160k ... thats a bit excessive for me but as long as it works for you. I would try and get more solid carbs on your route. I usually try and get something savory when I stop as its generally sweet stuff that I carry. Two OTE bars and a bag of Swizzels drumstick squashies are usually enough for 140 - 160k for me. Rode to Tan hill a few weeks back which was 230k from York and had two stops, both at Leyburn so stopped at Thomas's in the market and devoured a steak bake, pizza and some other stuff on the way back round:D

Hope you get decent weather for London to Paris!

Cheers. Great route. Calais, Arras, Compiegne, Paris via the Somme battlefields.

Last September I rode the World Championships sportive that started in Harrogate and we rode up Trapping Hill out of Lofthouse. Never ridden in North Yorks before. Jeez that was brutal in the pouring rain!

Cheap gels are minging, the likes of SIS sport etc. However Gu ones are really nice - salted caramel, chocolate outrage and salted watermelon are my personal favourites. The other brand I have used are Torq brand. They do caffeine and non caffeine ones, they even had a limited edition beer flavoured one at one point.

Caffeine:
  • Banoffee pie
  • Forest fruits
  • Caramel latte

Non caffeine:
  • Apple Crumble.
  • Cherry Bakewell.
  • Cherry Yoghurt.
  • Lemon Drizzle.
  • Orange & Bananna.
  • Raspberry Ripple.
  • Rhubarb & Custard.
  • Strawberry Yoghurt.

They cost a bit more than the cheapo mingers but I don't mind paying it as I like the flavours

I love Torq ones, but only use them occasionally as I prefer proper food when I'm out cycling.

You cant get them (Torq) in the USA and so I imported a box of 60 odd to use on rides - however I didn't think they went off (don't know why) ended up throwing about 50 odd of them out :confused:

Down in the South West on the southern edge of Le Montagne Noir.
From where I stay it is 14km down to the nearest town Revel - Cat 3 TDF climb on the way back up

Superb, I bet you're a tiny bit excited ... I know I would be:D

Cat 3 climbs are usually comfortable, unless its fullgas then of course nothing is comfortable.:devilish:
