Caffeine hit for Cyclists and Runners

Always used one or two gels on a long ride.
Chatting to a friend who is on the racing circuit in London who told me about energy gum that a lot of them are using.

Just tried it on a 60k ride today. The ride ends in a horrible cobbled climb maxing out at 30 degrees. Took some gum 2 km away and ended up beating my PB quite easily.
Tastes nice (unlike gels) and easy to get access to whilst riding

I don't bike ride but always have caffeine mixed with my pre workout shake before lifting weights. I have quite a big dose of 300mg, but I have a high tolerance to caffeine. It gives my workouts a big boost.

Makes the breath smell nice so you (sorry, your friends friend) are more likely to be quicker o_O

1finny Not being funny & not taking a stance either way but do you not see this as a bit like cheating? (I admit to eating jelly babies during the GNR which is probably similar)

Not sure I would take chewing gum whilst riding. There is always the slightest chance you hit a pothole, the gum gets lodged down your throat. Ill stick to shot blocks!

I've just started using 'caffeine bullets' towards the end of my runs which taste like the old Wrigley's spearmint chews. I've found them much better than the gels I've used in the past. They have 100mg of caffeine per chew.

Do you think having a coffee is cheating? Serena Williams is well known for having a double espresso before matches.

Cheap gels are minging, the likes of SIS sport etc. However Gu ones are really nice - salted caramel, chocolate outrage and salted watermelon are my personal favourites. The other brand I have used are Torq brand. They do caffeine and non caffeine ones, they even had a limited edition beer flavoured one at one point.

Caffeine:
  • Banoffee pie
  • Forest fruits
  • Caramel latte

Non caffeine:
  • Apple Crumble.
  • Cherry Bakewell.
  • Cherry Yoghurt.
  • Lemon Drizzle.
  • Orange & Bananna.
  • Raspberry Ripple.
  • Rhubarb & Custard.
  • Strawberry Yoghurt.

They cost a bit more than the cheapo mingers but I don't mind paying it as I like the flavours

The question was a bit tongue in cheek but is really about why is it ok to enhance performance with one thing & not with another?

Point for both cyclists and runners.

You managed to carry the full tube/packet/bottle with you, take the fugging rubbish home with you, you are not on the Tour De France, you are not running in the Olympics. Drives me nuts following cyclists (in particular) and watching them chuck empty packets and bottles into the hedgerow like they see on the TdF. Chunts*.

Thank you.

*Obviously only applies to those who litter, other cyclists and runners are lovely people.
