Today wasn’t our fight

Brighton are a mid table premier league team. Our lack of pressing from the front and lack of numbers in midfield, made them look good.

They've been in the Premier league for half a decade. We've been in the Championship for the same timeframe. A mid table Premier League side gets over £100 million in prize money. The winners of the Championship don't even get £1 million. It takes a lot of investment in quality to be a mid table Premier League side. They've had around 500 million in prize money since we were last in the Premier League. Is it any wonder that they were so much better than us?

We were completely outclassed. I had not realised the gulf between top half of prem and champ was so great. We could not get near them so cant really blame the team - still it hurts
It’s only a single sample size though isn’t it? Sometimes teams lose 5-1 against sides who are no better than them generally.

They played much better than us today, for any amount of possible reasons. It’s not a big deal and, if we’re honest, neither is the FA Cup anymore unless you get to the 5-6th rounds. I was over today’s result by about 5.15.

A couple of things struck me.

Alexis MacAllister was signed from Argentinos Juniors for £7 million. Does Boro gave a scouting network capable of finding players like that in far flung places?

Did Carrick really send the team out to win the game? The only way for Boro to win the game was to knock Brighton off their game but that didn't happen at all. Brighton always had time and space, Boro sat off them all afternoon. If Carrick expected Brighton to be lackadaisical, it didn't happen. It would have been a big upset to knock Brighton out, but Boro have to up their game if they expect to stay in the playoff places.

It's amazing sheff wed a division below could beat a higher premier league team with the right attitude and tactics. Nevermind the gulf play like you mean it

Anyway - couldn't agree more with the OP. We have other priorities and I just hope today's result doesn't affect morale so we can continue to push on in the league. I can't believe there'd ever be a day when we'd lose 5-1 and I'd be completely over it as soon as the final whistle blows, but today was that day.
