Starmers biggest problem.

He is entertaining and has a unique charisma. In small doses. I'd argue the more you see of him, the more you realise it's a one trick act. I suspect Cummings knows this which is why he's kept out of the public eye as much as possible.

Its probably more the charisma of an after dinner speaker. Not sure it's what you'd expect to see from a PM. Although enough people must buy it.

I think he's a snake myself, but I can see why people fall for the act.
Pretty much this. There's only so much "we can jolly well do it because we're British" that he'll be able to get away with.

The tories will put up with Johnson so long as the tories are polling above labour. They won't care to much that Starmer is polling above Johnson as they can adress that later by dumping Johnson.

What the tories do very well, is select a leader and be quick to dump that leader should it start effecting how the party as a whole poll.

Johnson is failing miserably in the public eye despite many claiming he is still fooling great swathes of the electorate. That clearly is not the case. For every death there are numerous people, friends and families, that will want to hold Johnson to account.

The Build Build Build on the lecturn was easy to understand, the fact it was boll ocks no one cares.

I think PMQ he gets demolished by Starmer but I never see that on the the front pages, and no one cares.

I agree we need a nasty terwaat, Blair had one and this goon has a very good one.

There is enough smut on him

90% of the people dying of Covid are over 65, and 80% are over 75. It seems that elderly people are more susceptible. But I doubt that there are numerous people who, when the grief of their loss diminishes, will want to prolong the agony any longer. No doubt there will be inquiries into how the government handled the pandemic - and they'll show it was poor - but I think most people will eventually accept that it was an unprecedented and unforeseeable occurrence and just move on.

Starmer needs to be as different to Johnson as he can and learn a lot from this bloke

Unfortunately I don't think Starmer has that in him, and I'm not sure it could even be coached into him. Much as I dislike Blair, as a communicator he was fearless and passionate - borderline mocking the questioner and getting away with it - and neither of the two leaders today can touch him on that front.

Unfortunately we live in an age now in which style is over anything substantial. We have Tony Blair and then David Cameron to thank for that.

If you had broadcasted the last few PMQs via radio to the public 50 years ago, you would have thought Starmer was the one who was PM and fat **** was just a gimmick politician who sounds unfit for any political office.

I don't think Starmer has it in his makeup to crack one liners or deliver knock out blows. He's slowly chipping away at Boris and you can tell how much that gets under his skin. Yet I do think Boris' greatest enemy is himself. It'll take a scandal or boredom for Boris to give up this job though. Maybe once a few trade deals are signed off and post COVID we get back to normality, he may call it a day.

I honestly believe he is an awful public speaker.
I don't get why people are impressed by him.
I don't think he has charisma, or is at all impressive.
And when he is off script he is simply awful.

He's obviously a brilliant writer and a bright bloke, but as a performer I don't see it.

Johnson is popular but not in voting terms much more popular than Theresa May.

The votes were for the Tories not Johnson and many of them were down to Brexit.

If Johnson hadn’t promised to get it done Nigel Farage was going to destroy the Tories at the election.

Johnson is neither a good or bad performer, he gets away with a lot by being extremely posh which means a lot of working people think he is automatically clever.

Starmer and Labour will win the next election if they have a solid manifesto which appeals to enough people, like Corbyn did in 2017 when he reversed a 20% Tory lead in the space of 4 weeks and nearly pulled it off. Starmer looks safe, I don’t think Labour will be trying to close a gap in the polls next time around.

This is the problem. I also agree with the OP. Starmer is a better politician than Bozo by an order of magnitude. Sadly that doesn't matter in this country. There are too many stupid, uneducated and uninterested people who don't bother grasping what happening. They see bozo banging the dispatch box and shouting "whiffle" whilst the backbenchers cheer and assume he's doing well on the back of it.

It's genuinely , extremely depressing.
Thing is SmallTown & I'm going to apologise but have to say, you constantly argue & jump on any political thread regarding the tories & Brexit that I have this vision of you been a depressed person full stop, you never seem happy, continually arguing all the time & never see anything from someone else's point of view
I'm so glad that I'm in your group of uneducated, uninterested & stupid people, as a person I've achieved so much, as a family person & work wise, not to far from retirement, I also go out my way to help others as a volunteer, so I am interested in other people & care also
There are a few posters on here now who fit voters in a stereotype for make yourselves happy instead of live & let live & respecting people's choice

I think the attraction with many is that BoJo is seen as 'quintessentially British' and with the emergence of Brexit (or more accuratly the reasons why people voted for it) his persona plays into that mindset.

Its the usual misguided and inaccurate rubbish about making Britain the great national it once was, like we were when we ruled the world!!! (etc)

Bojo is the public school "Flashman" - bullying freshers and "fagging"
Starmer is the suit you keep in the Wardrobe for weddings and funerals and an overcoat with last years poppy on the lapel.

A very good post holgate & without having to call other voters who differed to you, 👍

It is, so the Labour hierarchy need to match the scruples of Cummins and his ilk? Some sort of shady campaign by a faceless analytical company that spreads lies and dis-information memes on social media that puts the emphasis on acting in your own self interest to 'get things done'
Don't forget those fake manifesto websites that somehow appear at the top on Google searches.

Starmer is not dividing the party, more like trying to repair an already divided party and there are bound to be casualties in the process.

I believe he is dividing the party. He has already alienated most BLM supporters and friends of Palestine. From what I see on twitter Labour are leaking members at an ever increasing rate. Most on the left of the party have had enough already.

I agree with that, he has to unite it but he's got to be balanced about it and do what he can to rid the party of many of those who looked to split it in the last few years.

Some have already been deselected, making as much trouble for the party as they could on the way out. Those receiving funds from clandestine foreign influence in particular. They need to be expelled.
