Why open pubs and restaurants on a Saturday? When they are likely to be overwhelmed, putting a strain on our hospitals and police forces as drunken violence will surely follow?

Why not open on a Monday, when less people are likely to visit and give establishments a week to settle before they go back to their busiest days?

It's almost as if the government care more about appeasing the idiot masses with glorious "Independence day UK" headlines than they car about actually controlling the virus and saving peoples lives.

Scratch that, it's EXACTLY because the government care more about their own perception than they do about saving peoples lives.

I don't think it would particularly matter when they reopened.

Regardless of the day, you'll still get the pondlife running to the pubs with their mates to get the drinks in.

Not too sure that our population are less likely to visit pubs on a Monday. Making Monday the relevant d for drinking day would cause a lot of people to add Monday (and possibly hangover Tuesday) to a long weekend. At least people to not have to take more time off work when the day is a Saturday.

Many people still aren’t working at the moment, We saw the beaches packed on Tuesday and Wednesday so I’m sure the same thing will happen to the pubs regardless of which day they open. Stay away If you possibly can.

Literally makes no odds what they day they open... just an excuse to have a pop this one.

By the way they aren’t been forced to open on Saturday! They can open whenever they like. It’s not like every pub in the land is going to open. A lot aren’t. Therefore people on mass won’t be able to get in the pubs that are open anyways due to limited space.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Cooper.

Those that open (or at least the ones I know) are implementing a booking system which means they wont be overcrowded and can implement table service and other preventative measures.

@Marvanelli - Nice to know i'm pondlife, despite following every single one of the governments guidelines for the last 3 months.

It had to happen sometime 😆

Same here, each pub I know that is opening is taking advance bookings. You can’t just go on a pub crawl.

Who are you calling pondlife by the way?

Oh people who want to continue living life?

I was listening to a chief of police who was saying they hadn't been consulted about it and feels they should have. He wasn't against pubs opening, but the day the government chose. His argument was that Saturday's are always difficult and he expects every force to be over stretched. He would have preferred a Thursday opening to ease the madness that will ensue.

To say it is an excuse to have a pop seems silly to me when you hear experts against it.

The same who rocked up on Bournemouth beach a few days ago with no respect to the public...
ALL of them?
The Bournemouth beach incident isn't an isolated one, probably happens every summer. Due to the current climate it's been exaggerated.

Where did I say all of them? Where did I say that everyone who goes to the pub on Saturday are pond life?

A lot of the UK will be looking forward to actually socialising with friends and family (in a respectable manner) this Saturday at their local, probably for the first time in over 3 months....I for one too will be looking forward to catching up with friends and family over a meal.

However you have to be very very naive if you think Saturday isn't going to attract a lot of the same selfish idiots who have no respect for the rest of the public...which was clearly shown at Bournemouth beach the other day...as well as being packed like sardines on trains...amongst other incidents that have occurred in the last week.
