SAS Rogue Heroes

I've binged watched the whole series of iPlayer and highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

Initially I was reluctant to watch because it's yet another WW2 programme/drama. Those doubts quickly disappeared as it's fantastic television. Really well written and directed. Those lads involved were totally bonkers and it's mad to think they had the balls to carry out the stuff they did. The audacity to destroy two boats in Benghazi was incredible!

If you've not seen it, start watching!

Their story does need telling but not in this way as most of it is just completely made up.

Read the real stories they deserve better than peaky blinders in the desert

Thanks for the recommendation Nero, I've taped it 👍

Most of it is absolutely true. Check if you like. Some of the first part is complete fantasy but as far as I know most of the raids and actions are based very closely on what they did. Of course they didn't ride around to the sound track of AC/DC "Highway To Hell" though as I read somewhere, if you think about it HTH was released closer to WW2 than we are now(1980)!

It’s more that the French spy love interest that the series is mainly based around didn’t exist and paddy mayne lunatic as a runway mad man.

Plus he was never in prison either.

I know all about how the regiment was formed and it’s an amazing story and no one way has more admiration for Stirling lewes or mayne than me. I just hate when reality is changed like this.

But I didn’t like the peaky blinders tropes.

I had the Ben MacIntyre SAS book in my Christmas Stocking and I'm looking forward to reading it..
Also, the last survivor Ben Sadler (I don't think is any relation) lives in a home not too far from me. Apparently he was consulted about the script. But script about entertainment loosely based on facts.

It's a cartoon version of events. Good TV. Not representative of what happened though.

I just add my absolute respect the individuals involved in the actual events.

Exactly this great tv but I always feel uncomfortable when real history is changed like this.

To base the story around a love interest that never existed I just found odd. As There was no French spy.

For anyone who is into this sort of non-fiction, can I suggest The Daily Telegraph Book of Military Obituaries (or likewise the DT Book of Naval Obits)

SAS Rogue Warriors by Ben McIntyre (author of the above mentioned book) is a great watch.

I also recommended a book to Jedi that is worth a read - The Day the Devils dropped in by Neil Barber. A true story of Merville Battery and the unbelievable heroics of the Paratroop Regiment. I have visited Merville and to see what they achieved is mind boggling. For the historians out there, if you ever visit Pegasus Bridge, Merville isn't too far away and the museum is well worth the visit.

Thanks I’ll check it out.

Pegasus bridge was a key operation as basically without that d day was all but over. As it was the cork in the bottle wasn’t it.

There were many strategic places like Pegasus Bridge that needed to be taken along the Normandy coastline with Mervillle being another one.

Point Du Hoc was another gun battery similar to Merville and the US Rangers suffered badly trying to take it. Unknown to them at the time (but it is suggested intelligence did know and didn't share the information), the Germans had moved the guns further inland.

It was and you are right but Pegasus was the time dependent one as it stopped the Germans from sending reinforcements to the other locations.

I am not a lover of Jeremy Clarkson but this is a good watch and if I remember rightly, his father in law (or some close relative) took part in it.

Again, I have visited St Nazaire and walked around the dry dock and it brings into perspective the task these men undertook. Opposite the dry dock are the U-Boat pens of St Nazaire that at the time will have been heavily fortified.

Anyway, give it a watch.

What I meant to add was there was also the Lancastria was sunk off the coast of St Nazaire which was evacuating British troops two weeks after the Dunkirk operation with the loss of upwards of 5,000 lives.

We watched the Ben MacIntyre's original series from his meticulous research and it was really good. We then tried watching the recent BBC series but it just didn't compare so binned it.

It’s a good tv show as entertainment but I don’t see why they would base so much of it around something that didn’t exist.

Pretty much every war film/TV series ever made will use a "narrative device" to advance the story telling. The Battle of Britain film shows a love story between the squadron leader and a WAAF in fact all the portrayed pilots are fictional. Zulu portrays all the British soldiers as Welsh, this was not so. I could go on but the point is that the inclusion of a narrative device (in this case it is a "framing story") helps to bring the individual events into a coherent narrative. Without this device it might be that the story would simply appear to be collection of incidents. That would be fine for a documentary, this is not a documentary and shouldn't be judged as such.

I confess I haven't watched all of it yet and there are some bits that stand out as rather improbable, what I have found though is that most of those seemingly incredible events are actually true!
