Coalmine gets the green light

The mine will also produce an estimated 400,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year, increasing the UK’s emissions by the equivalent of putting 200,000 cars on the road.

The vast majority of the coal produced will be for export, as most UK steel producers have rejected the use of the coal, which is high in sulphur and surplus to their needs.

How do they justify this? Whose pockets are being lined?

Probably Moggy, he'll be hoping it will lead to a return of children up chimneys

The locals are 90% for it, and it gives decent jobs in a deprived area, but that is the only positive.

It does seem strange decision on a wider basis as we need to reduce carbon emissions.

Coal use in the UK must be tiny and shrinking. After our 2 steel works who else regularly uses coal, the coal fired power stations are there just on stand by. then there is steam railways and a few ex OAP miners who still get a free allowance until they die.

Is there a market for the coal?

If there isn't the project will fail so no emissions to worry about.

If there is then presumably it's not a market that is just being created because of the existence of this mine & the market won't disappear if this mine isn't built. This coal will be replacing an existing or planned supply. What difference does it make to the environment if the 400,000 tonnes of emissions are made here or elsewhere? It will certainly make a difference to the people of Cumbria if the coal comes from here.

OK Muttley its not great working condition for coal face workers - I will amend to decent paid jobs.

Genius move: get our carbon emissions so high that there's an integer overflow and they become negative

There are arguments for and against this move.

If you go ahead and open the mine , you then have the views against how we are ignoring Climate Change.

When you do not go ahead with the mine , in comes the argument that considering we still need our coke/coal for our steel industry, then why shouldn’t the UK have the jobs rather than importing the fuel from Russia or Australia.

Either way there is criticism, so maybe that is why the Government did not decide earlier.

So this country now destroys our environment in order to provide foreign countries with cheap fossil fuel?
What the !!!!
This bunch of money-grabbing ---holes are well beyond a joke(n)

UK has been burning coal at at least 1 coal power station for 2 -3 weeks now and we really needed it last week during that 4-5 day complete lull in the wind. Right now it's supplying 1.3GW or 3.7% of current Grid demand of 35.1GW (peak demand is 45GW in any 24hr period ) and will probably have to continue doing so for the coming predicted 10 day freeze we are about to enter , at eh bare minimum.
