Why don’t the likes of Andy Townsend ( parlour ince) never get mentioned as ex Boro players in all time boro XI

I never particularly warmed to the guy, I just think at times he thought we were a bit beneath a player of his 'stature'. But he didn't go through the motions, so can't complain about his time here. I do find him weirdly utterly cold towards us whenever he is on TV, it's like he has erased any memory of playing for us.

I aLeary’s remember kammys dad saying he’d never play for bor, I think just after he’d signed for Leeds... his dad was a docker at teesport and at the time seemed to have something against the boro...

If his dad was a Leeds fan that's all you need to know.

Fans of other clubs based on Teesside often seem to have an irrational dislike of Boro. Almost as if they're bitter about the coverage Boro get and the fact that's the team most people talk about (even though it makes perfect sense because, erm they're the local team).

I suspect some of them also don't like the constant reminders they're glory supporters.

Remember him having a bit of crack with the East stand when it was plain to see he was blowing out of his årse and the East stand were letting him know.
He was in total agreement with them. 🤣

Good pro. Shame he was at the end of his career because it was plain to see his vision and range of passing were still top class.

I mean I class anyone that's wore the shirt as an ex player.

It can be pretty galling to find out someone you looked up to or supported while they were with us treat us with indifference or worse, but it's part and parcel I guess. We're in the position (or at least were during that time) of offering big contracts to attract those sorts of players, and they didn't have much attachment to the place.

I've also found it interesting to hear ex-pros talk about their dealings with the club. Obviously for them a club is an employer and I think we don't experience the ins and outs of that relationship and often don't hear about it until much later down the line.

Anyway, yes I do class him as an ex player and thought he did well for us. But I've learned not to get too offended by his opinions on his time here.

100%. I know Liverpool, Tottenham and United fans on Teesside who absolutely hate us, it’s so weird as we’re zero threat to them.

Kammy, as he’s got older/played for us and due to his friendship with Gibson, has clearly developed a soft spot for Boro. But he doesn’t “love” us, not if he grew up supporting Leeds. You can only love one club properly imho.

Loved Townsend when he was here.

Always thought he was a superb captain and a vital part of the team.

There was no coincidence we did well when he was here.

Always thought he was a true professional and left everything on the pitch and made others around him play better.

Definitely one of the better captains we've had during the Riverside era.

Wasn't Kamara driving up to sign for us and heard Leeds had shown interest in him and turned around and signed for them - or is that just a rumour?

As for Townsend, he played in some great games for us but it was strictly business with him. How can you ever expect a man to be loyal who played for the Republic of Ireland with a broad southern accent? I've never heard him say a good word about us.

the amount of players that have robbed a living here and choose townsend who was always professional, always put in 100%. Wasnt the fittest but always put in a shift, decent player too.

To be fair It dates back a few years to Covid when I guess everybody was bored And the OP was starting threads for fun.
Wow this is an old one even I’d forgotten about this.

Btw for context of course Townsend was a boro player but my point was like parlour and ince is that despite their past history and international pedigree is that they never seem to come up in anyones top boro 11s like say Merson would or even Robbie mustoe.

That was my point.

Give me a model pro who puts in the level of performance Townsend did, but has no affinity to the club over someone like Braithwaite or Kai Kamara who talk about how much they supposedly love it here, but are patchy at best and then start angling for moves away.

Don't think Townsend pretended to be here for any other reason than to do a job. Sounds like he has fond memories of his time here, the same way you'd have fond memories of any other good job you've had. Still just a job though, but so what. At least he wasn't dishonest.

A lot of our big name signings in the prem probably came here for the money. Some I think went on to develop a genuine love and affection for the club and the area and it's great when that happens. Others didn't.

As long as they're not actively running the club down then it doesn't really matter does it? It's what they do on the pitch that really counts and I don't think anyone could fault Townsend for that.

I don't have any negative recollections of his time as a player with us.

I still maintain that he wouldn't have signed for us if it weren't for Robbo.

I think Ince does quite a bit to be fair. He would do more if it not for the fact Boateng was better.

Parlour and Townsend don't feature because they're not good enough to, simple as that.

Merson has probably slagged the club off more than anyone over the years and as you say, features in them all the time.

I agree with you on the playing field with Townsend but can't agree that he's got fond memories of his time here. I have only ever heard him skip over his time here and put it down as a jolly with Gazza. I am more than willing to stand corrected though.

I agree with the Merson comments but he single handly dragged us back into the Premier.

I never get the negativity surrounding Parlour.
