Debit Transaction help please

Any experiences of this would be very helpful! I realise fmttm isn’t a bank but full of helpful people.

I was buying my wife’s Christmas present and paid via chip and pin, the card machine approved my card and the money left my bank. The merchant then said it had been declined and they had received no money on their end. It appears the money has disappeared into thin air. I have spoken to my bank who say it’s on the retailer to deal with it. I have essentially paid twice for something.

Has this happened to anyone before?

If it’s currently showing as a pending transaction it can take a few days to clear… either returning to your account or going to the vendor.

Give it a few days then if it hasn’t come back and shows as two individual debts speak to the bank and ask for the individual authorisations of each payment… you can then present this to the vendor and ask for a refund.

If they refuse you can then raise a dispute with your bank

How long ago did you pay for it?

Did you have to attempt the payment twice so there’s two transactions?

I’ve seen it before where there has been a declined payment but will show as a pending transaction in your account (usually for 4-5 days) and then drops back into the account.

If it’s not that scenario, I think it’ll be difficult for the retailer to prove they haven’t received it as such.

I think the bank would need to provide some form of payment reference or conduct a trace and provide proof of the money being paid/sent.

This should then help the retailer track at their end.

Unfortunately, both parties will often try to blame each other and you’ll be caught in the middle.

If you get no luck, don’t hesitate to go down the complaints route. You’ll have a better chance of somebody taking ownership of the issue and providing you with a resolution.

I’ve had experience with similar things before and companies are often quick to say there’s nothing they can do. There are definitely things they can do, some just try to fob you off first.

On a similar note, I paid for petrol, tapped my card. The retailer said it didn't go through, can you insert your card and put your pin in.

Checked my account a few days later, the transaction went through twice. Contacted my bank and they refunded my money within 2 hrs.

I would let your banking transactions clear then check if its gone through twice. Contact your bank if it has.
