The next World Cup format sounds horrendous

Very frustrating for England, winning all of their first group games and then ending up in the 3 team group of death. Then going out unbeaten with 2 goalless draws.
I think the proper group of death in 82 was Argentina/Brazil/Italy.
I honestly can’t remember how we played against Spain that year but watched the Germany match in the Bar at the Yellow Rose. Had to ask the manager to put the telly on. Different back then.

The guardian makes a valid point as it’s 3 teams it mean one will not play and Yuen face a side who will have already have played so only need a point.

There is also, some say, a significant disadvantage to being the team that does not feature in the opening group game. Sixteen countries will start their campaigns against a team who have already played. If that team won their opening game they will know they only need a point to progress. If they lost it, they know they need a win to stand any chance of avoiding elimination. Both suggest a very different approach to a game where both teams start on zero points.

Wouldn't be the 1st time teams have colluded in the final game to ensure they both advance...

Plus as bbc just said as the 3 concacaf members are hosts 🇲🇽 🇨🇦 and 🇺🇸 that means three additional concacaf slots to the newly added number. So you will have 7/8 concacaf members qualifying.
New Zealand at least will get a spot as the Oceana winner.

They had a final in 82. It was 1950 I think when they didn’t? Uruguay beat Brazil in what was the “de facto” final though, Brazil missed their chance to win a home tournament (and failed again in 2014).
Correct. The final deciding game of a four team group. Brazil only needed to draw to win their first WC and as hosts were favourites but Uruguay came from 1-0 down to break Brazilian hearts.

Of course in those days I doubt Brazil were revered in any way as they hadn’t won anything yet. England were the ones who messed up the most.

So will it be a winter world cup again?

40 degrees in Florida, Texas, Vegas and Mexico in the summer. Wouldn't want to play in that heat.
Florida, Texas and Vegas will already have roofs and maybe they'll get one some in Mexico?

Football is a global game. The only way to improve the quality of other nation's footballing sides is to compete in major tournaments.

It might go some way to preventing players using loose family connections and passports to play for another country other than the one they were born in. Like Turkish playing for Germany, Africans playing for France and Irishmen playing for England.

I have vague memorys of the 2002 world cup being at awkward times. They put the Argentina game on one of the telly's at work and I'm sure I can remember going to the pub before going to work at about 9am drinking Guinness while watching us play Nigeria. Can't imagine doing that now. Not sure if work got less fun or if I got less fun.

You should have a few pints on the way to work to see if it still ends up being fun 👀

Yeah I was at Uni for that WC. Remember a few bacon sarnies and pints of Guinness in the student Union for 9am kick offs

There's not a single player in the German team born in Turkey.

There's not a single player in the England team born in Ireland

There are only two players born in Africa In the French team, Camavinga (Angola) and Mandanda (DR Congo), both benchwarmers, and both were raised in France from the age of 2.

But, despite the ignorant implications of your post, such a move would negatively impact developing nations far more.

A quarter to a third of each African nations squad at this World Cup are made up of players born in Europe, using "loose family connections and passports" to play for a country they weren't born in.
