Ben White - refreshing break from the archetypal footballer

Love this kid - and think he's a top player too. While Kane's polishing his er...matchballs (?) White will be doing something unplanned and non-football-related.

“Sitting down and watching a 90-minute game after I’ve trained all day and had four or five meetings about football … the last thing I want to do is watch more football,”

I learned from getting released [by Southampton at 16]. It was a rubbish day but I didn’t cry. It was on to the next thing and it is like that after a game if you didn’t play so well. After my first one for Arsenal against Brentford [at the start of last season] I was hammered. Now they are all praising me.”

“I’m a day-to day-person. I wake up, look after that day and try to have the best one ever. I’m not someone that has anything planned for in normal life."

Is your surname Molesworth by any chance?😊

Sounds like he and his family have never enjoyed watching football though, I don't think he's making a statement.

He didn't watch it as a kid, he doesn't watch it now, he only enjoys playing it.

I remember David hurst on soccer am admitting he didn’t watch football and he couldn’t name any players as hdd Ed didn’t like the sport.

Never sat right with me that as yes it’s a job But surely the passion must be there to get the best out of it.

There have been quite a few very good players down the years who have no "love" for the game, they play it because they are good at it (generally enjoy fitness/physical activity stuff) but little interest in it beyond the pay check. Nicolas Anelka is probably the best known example recently.

Forwards are different though as being self centred is not really an issue it a selfish position but for a defender surely they need to watch the opposition and study the game.

He talks in the Amazon Arsenal series about how he came to be footballer. It was a neighbour who spotted his talents and took him to football as he and his family initially had no interest in it.

And I'm sure he does his homework. It doesn't mean he's going to switch on the telly and search for a game to watch like some of us sad sacks do. I watched the women's Arsenal v Man Utd game last night for example, I'm pretty sure Ben didn't.
