Palace and West Ham allegedly interested in Jones

Meanwhile the two strikers we signed are sat on the bench.
Agreed, that has to change, I think Forss will get game time under Carrick, Hoppe is for next season

Having gone in for this model I don't think we should ditch it straight away.
Of course not, strategies take time to mature

But you can't just "do a Brentford". They did not get promoted because they had a model. They got promoted because they were good at that model.
Agreed, but they weren't good at it at first, they had to stick to it.

And I don't think it's a good match for us. Brentford are in London. They don't have an academy.
Why isn't it a good model, they're footballers not tourists, not being in London has never stopped us having success in the past. If they are signing League One level players or reserves in french sides, then the cost of living in London is a negative factor for them and a positive for us. On top of that, 5 years ago Brentford were seen as small fry, we have a much bigger national and european reputation than them. Also having an academy is a bonus because it's gives us free players form a FFP perspective.

22/23 - 21 league appearances so far (not including Jones who come in at 20 so never played youth level for us)
21/22 - 100 appearances
20/21 - 121

It's like having 3 first team players a season, at 2m a pop each that saves us 6m a year. It's a bonus because it frees up money to sign more projects like Brentford did.

I can't see the negatives in the strategy, if we get the execution right then we are in a good position to benefit.

If you believe this model is a bad fit for us, then what's your alternative strategy?

We did not spend the Tav / Spence money in full . £25m in £5m out , so there should be funds available . If not we may have to sell Jones to get the money to re invest .
£15m and he will go , and that would pay for a few to come in . Let’s hope they have some diamonds lined up .
Same with Fry , a big enough bid and he will go .

What we’d give for a Ripley eh
Yeah exactly, not many players managed to bully Ripley out of the game, he gave better than he got to be quite honest and bullied the fullbacks out of the game. Seen many of them shyte out of a 50-50 tackle with him or get an elbow, stamp or headbutt for trying to rough him up

I would prefer for us to sign defensive coaches. Play pragmatic football. Have a reasonably small squad. Use the academy. Pick up players in their last year of contract. put the money in wages rather than transfer fees. Try to hang on to our best players rather than sell them.
I just think the Brentford model is too hard to do, and it's too crowded a market. And we've shown previously our ineptitude at using this model under Southgate.
I do think it is worth investing heavily into scouting mind. Brexit has opened up far more avenues. It's far easier for players to get permits. We need to be identifying the markets and then getting the players in from those markets rather than other clubs sloppy seconds. And if we do get players in, do the work to let them settle. Get a translator. But their mate as well.

We've had defensive coaches like Pulis, and the fans stopped going.

I agree with the reasonably small squad, we should have circa 10-12 experienced first team players, 8ish players that are at various stages of being a project signing, and the rest U21s.

the difficulty with a strategy of only signing players in the last year of their contract, is that maybe only 25% of players are in that position, and there is probably even more competition for players in that position. The flip side of holding onto your best players is they enter the last year of their contract and you lose them for less than market value, which is what would have happened next summer with Tav.

Yes the one brexit benefit is that it is easier to get foreign players in, but you need to invest in scouting networks and have good contacts in those countries for that to work. There is no silver bullet solution. I agree also that we have to be better at supporting players coming over from other cultures, Payero was always going to be homesick with one spanish speaker who was 30 years older to talk to

‘In the world of the blind the one eyed man is King’. Jones will disappear into absolute obscurity-In a list of many, Jones is top amongst deluded Boro fans who salivated at 10 to 12 games in a poor Championship season to crown him the new Messiah. We have such a paucity of talent he will no doubt start again tonight and be completely anonymous and pointless - a complete waste of a shirt. I despair that so many accept his nothingness week in and week out and refuse to say what they see in front of their eyes. I couldn’t give a fig about stats I have watched him all season and he has been utter garbage. I’m sure we will revisit this again around five to ten tonight.

We've had defensive coaches like Karanka and McLaren and we got promoted and won cups etc. Once you've established yourself in the prem then you'll have the money to buy players capable of playing fancy **** football that the fans will enjoy.

Karanka was defensive, but so good at it that it was impressive.

I don't agree that McClaren was defensive, he was balanced

It would be a very boring forum if all Boro fans agreed with you.

Just out of interest, what do you think about the rest of our illustrious squad??

I’d assume that given how much debt the club is in to Gibson, if he wants to make the club an attractive proposition for any potential buyer in the future, we’d have to sell any major assets whose value could potentially depreciate (such as Jones) unless said asset could play a major role in promotion etc (unlikely this season).

My guess is that if clubs come knocking with big bucks, even in January, he’ll be off. You’d have to assume as a Londoner that he’d want to leave too, so it wouldn’t be in our interests to keep him.

For what he cost/came from Jones has been good. As his form has dipped however, his weaknesses have become more apparent. Chief among those is a poor first touch. Wenger famously never signed a player with a poor first touch and personally, it always been the one failing that most annoys me. Too much standing on the South Terrace and hearing "couldn't trap a bag of wet cement" type comments! Not sure if it's an attribute that can be coached tbh.
I wouldn't want to sell him necessarily, but I wouldn't be basing a team around him. In the right shape, and in certain types of game, he's useful - and a firing Crooks could help him back to form - but we need some competition for him.

I think he's very similar to raheem sterling in terms of attributes and look at the career he's had. He needs a lot of coaching but his defensive attributes are better than sterling's.

To be honest the only time I heard Jones name in the commentary last night was when he was subbed.

#UTB

Comparing Jones to Sterling is some stretch! He is a million miles away from the player Sterling is and I’m not a big fan of Sterling. This is the sort of ridiculous hype that inflates Jonesquality way above its actual limitations - Sterling - wow

Just to jump back on this thread. I mentioned Jones poor decisions yesterday, needless fouls/booking etc. What was going through his mind pushing their lad to the floor when he was about to take a throw in…? 3-1 up, no need for it, and he’s now one step closer to a 2 game ban.

Jones was really average again last night lost possession in good areas and he leaves Smith 2 on 1 too often. Really unprofessional how he picks up stupid yellow cards for fouls he simply doesn’t have to make.
I think Steffen is strong
I think Fry and Lenehan are good championship players. I really wish they could carry the ball out of defence more often.
I think Giles has a great left foot and would be stronger in a better team
I think Djiksteel is unlucky not to get more game time
I think Howson is a good pro
I really like Hackney - ability and attitude
I like McGree’s commitment - needs to show more consistency now he is a regular starter.
Like Jones, Crooks had a great spell last season but has gone off the boil but still a player there.
I love Watmore’s energy and enthusiasm and would start him every game
Ackpom is proving a lot of people, me included wrong this season.
Need to see more of Forsse and Hope to have any sort of informed opinion.
Hope Coburn has a good loan and comes back a better more experienced pro.
Pretty ambivalent on the rest.
There you go
